By Marko Peric Iheard astory once, abouta talented basketball player who was not playing anywhere near his potential. His disgruntled coach asked him: ‘‘What’s wrong with your game, kid? Is it ignorance or apathy?’’ The player replied ‘‘I don’t know, Editorial: Ignorance i amaN er Latha higher education, and there wasa small rally at the Barn. The sad part is that very few peoplelifted a finger to help the cause. Other universities had larger turnouts, some as high as five thousand, but here only one percent of the student body went to the rally. coach, and I really don’t care.’’ Here’s another frightening Although this may be a humorous little story, it has a nasty note of truth. January 25, the day designated as Strike Day, came and went without the fire- works that were expected. I’m not pushing an agenda of sub- versive action or plotting to over- throw the powers that be, and I Other universities had larger turnouts, some as high as five thousand, but here only one per- cent of the student body went to the rally. fact: Student Union was pleased with the turnout for the raliy. I don’t want to slam SU, but 35 people at a rally is pathetic. I wouldn’t be pleased. Students should be taking a role in the process of determin- ing the future of higher educa- tion. Instead, we are content to stand aside and let others deter- agree that a student strike was not the best plan of action. We have to pay hundreds, nay thousands of dollars to attend classes. How much sense does itreally make to walk out of class in protest? Studentshave little to gain by such action. Students have other options: UPEI Student Union arranged meetings with local politicians about the future of mine our future for us. It remains to be seen what will become of our govern- ment’s plans for funding of post-secondary education; how- ever, if we don’t do anything, we won’t be able to complain if higher education is destroyed, because we will be guilty of not trying to save it.
