T THE MATTER OF ADDRESSES.
Lord Miuto during his brief visit to
Charlottetown was made the recipient of
three addresses. As these documents go
they were models of their kind, not very
long, dtly and sincerely expressing the
feelings and wishes of the various bodies
of people in whose behalf they were spo-
ken. But it is worth while perhaps to
pause and consider the feelings of the
distinguished recipient of these
honors. How many times Their Excel-
lencies in a tour through Canada
have to listen to the repetition of the same
loyal sentiments, the same glod wishes,
cordial welcome, ,and hopes for future
happiness? What becomes of all the ad-
dresses at the end of a Viceregal tour?
Are they framed to grace the ancestral
halls ofthe noblemen who receive them,
or treasured up and transmitted among
their heirloo=us.or simply scattered to the
void as somethmg which like the news-
paper of the day perlshes after one read-
ing? 1
Shortly the sou and heir of King
Edward will visit Canada, after making
the tour of oiher Colonies beyond the
seas. What A collection of loyaladdresses
he mustbe already encumbered wlthl
And how many more await him as he
will journey through this long Dominion
from the atlantic to the Pacific. There is
a story extant, cited by the Ottawa Free I
Press, that when some one ventured at
Rideau Hall to congratulate the Marquis
fLorne and Princess Louise upon the
uu.ber of loyal addresses they had
received between Halifax and the Capital
tha Princess jocosely remarked, “Yes, 'I
believe if they were unrolled and joined
they would raach as far as Halifax.” And
to the raiding of all these, end twice as
many more presented In Ontario and the
West, the Marquis and Princest had been
compelled to listen, standing, Ianni the
Marquis to reply to each. There appears
to be a suffering aide to all this. It would
surely be a relief to the Duke of Coru-
wallif he could simply have the numerous
addresses handed in and considered as
read. The newspapers could give them
any necessary publicity on the same day
or the day following.
