Letter(s): THE “ISLAND WAY” To the Editor: Lets not locate Litton Industries here — do away with our weapons and the military — and begin that trek to World Peace. Go the “Island Way’? ... just like the Poles went the ‘Polish Way’’, the Czechs the ‘‘Czechoslovakian Way”, the Afghanistans the “Afghanistan Way”, the East Germans the ‘‘East German Way”, ... What the “Island Way’’ is spreading and what a farmer spreads on his fields are one in the same, Greg MacDougall “‘Lets Hope’’ This is a reply to the mindless, unthinking “‘Let’s Hope” letter in the last week’s issue of The Gem. 1) When you say ‘We as Island ers’’, please leave me out. 2) If you are going to omnis. ciently say that Litton is unwel- come and unneeded, why don’t you set up a psychic reading booth at the next carnival. After all, you seem to think yo divinely gifted with the opinions self of the masses ... so why not? 3) Why do you even mention your disapproval of Litton without elaborating on why you think that radar defence systems are evil? 4) Get Real — You want C.F.B. Summerside, the Queen Charlotte Armouries and D.V.A. to get off the Island? Are you on cheap drugs, or just cheap propoganda? 5) The department of Veterans Affairs looks after the people who saved your pacifistic hide (or at least your parents hide, since you are probably to young to remember enemy forces killing your family memers). Give them the respect that théy deserve, not more of this ‘‘defence is evil and not part of island life’? whining. 6) Canadian Forces largely play a defensive role, especially here at home. This is mainly because of our central and strategic loca. tion between the U.S.A and the Soviet Union. If we did not de- fend ourselves, our buddies the Americans would do it for us Personally, I do not want to live in another American-run banana republic. If you do, oh misguided so “Let's Hope”? you move Don Lane = Lynne Keating Jonathan Orlowski Shelli Wheaton. Brian Linkletter, “Don Lane Howard Beattie Nathan~ Stairs Lori Anne Heckber?. Joke on victorious joke candidate BRANDON, Man (CUP) — The joke was on James Malley when he won the student council presi- dential race at Brandon University last month. Malley, who ran on a joke plat- form of the Party Hardy Party, had no intention of winning the race. But he won Feb. 12, beating presidential incumbent Ruth Pryzner by 225 votes to 175. Malley, whose platform was based on humour and apathy, re- signed his position the next day. Students showed a lack of con- cern for student politics by voting for Malley, said education student Dough Sutherland. ‘‘Elections are popularity contests. The elécto- rate seemed to want someone that was fun,”’ Sutherland said. Candidate had imposter OTTAWA (CUP) — A candidate for student council vice-president (finance) at the University of Ottawa got another person to impersonate him and get him a grade in a Group Dynamics course last summer, the U of O Fulcrum reported March 20. But reporting the story almost cost the newspaper that week’s issue. Just after the Fulerum sent away its flats, the council called the printer and said it would not pay the bill. Council President Gabe Sekaly - March 27, 1986 said the corporation, which pub- lishes the Fulcrum, faced a law- suit from the candidate, John Ryan. By badering and slightly changing the story, the paper con- vinced the council to publish it. The Fulcrum published a class photograph of the Group Dyna- mics students, which the professor Hilroy Horan, said included all those who took the course. The paper also published a photo of John Ryan, who looks nothing like the man claiming to be Ryan in the class photo. The real John Ryan’s student number appears on the list for final grades in the course. Ryan won the race by an over- whelming vote. He said he would keep his seat despite the contro- versy. Earlier in the week the council successfully stopped La Rotonde, the french weekly at U of O, from publishing the same information. The council’s stalling tactics meant students did not see the paper until midway through the last day of voting.
