On 31st August last, the total gross debt
of the Dominion ot Canada was $346,301,-
784. Very nearly 228 millions of this was
represented by moneys borrowed and
payable in England. Some $8,T05.536
was money borrowed in Canada. Over
two millions was money deposited with
the Government by the banks as security
for the redemption of their circulation.
Over 26 millions was represented by the
Dominion notes in circulation, on which

presented the moneys due to depositors
in the Dominion savings banks. Then
there are trust funds held by the Govern-
ment amounting to over 8 millions, Prov-
ince accounts over 16 millions and miscel-
lions, making altogether the gross debt,

this large indebtedness we have nearly 46
millions in the sinking fund to pay oil' the
debt, nearly 7 millions of other invest-
ments, over 10 millions due by Provinces
and over 17 millions ot credits in miscel-
laneous and banking accounts. These

over 80 millions. Dedueting this from
the gross debt of 316 millions we l ave the

debt on 30th J une 1898 was $258,497,433.
