Thanks Gangll In June I attended a meeting in ‘Calgary of all the entertainment‘ directors frOm .across canada. It was very successful in that all the directors from the Maritimes met and discussed block booking of possible bands. Block booking allows \ for greatly reduced prices because the band will do »a tour of all the Maritime Universities and most of their travelling expenses can be divided up amongst the_ universities involved. Some band tours must be booked well in advance which is why we have partially booked some bands for first semester. They ginclude: "The Drivers", a recording group from England; The "X-Men", a rock band from Montreal; "Fabian ,,and James", 533 pub Vbandi from Newfoundland;- ~1Platinum Blond", ,a “tribute to the "Police" and " Paul Lawson" , who played-here last Spring. We will also be bringing back "Gilt" and “Terry crawford" as well as other favorites second semester, when they‘ are touring the J Maritimes. In the next edition of.. the Sun we will be asking‘ for any suggestions you» may have on bands you would like _to see coming to UPEI., . The coming school year has been called "This is the leYear of the Volunteer“. It “ is my feeling that the “ujéxpérience gained ‘from getting involved. in 'organizing and also part- icipating in activities can add greatly to a well .rounded education. Over the next school year ‘there will be many opportunities for all students to become active in Student, Union activities. Feel ,free to drop into the Student Union Centre and see J me if questions.‘ ‘you Ehave any Sincerely, Jim Mutter V.P.Internal ' .Kenny elo om'es you First I would like very much* to welcome the Freshmen to UPEI and welcome back. ‘all the returning students. ' Over the summer, there was a lot of work done by everyone down at the Student Union. Myself, I was busy with the Sunétrying to get a new location and getting it either typeset or on computer. As you can see _ the computer idea is working very well. 'Thanks to Professor Hancock and Dave ‘at the Computer Centre. We are still trying to. get a‘ new location for the Sun office but in the meantime the office is still located at nth floor Main. Anyone wishing to help with the Sun - either type, write stories, take pictures or just help lay it out,(most are paying jobs), let me know at .the Student Union office at the Barn or get in touch with Vicki McMillan. As far as :the radio station is concerned, we _ purchasedxsome new equipment and furniture and got back into tip-top shape. My sincere thanks go out to John Bentley, Victor Moore, Baker, and Malcolm Reid - hope 'I didn't miss anyone-~ thanks for all your help! This year we will be on cable -FM approximately September 20; therefore any who has .cable TV will be able to receive CIMN 700 on, .102.3 on ‘their dial. Hopefully you will all tune in! This school year at UPEI has been called "This 13" the. Year ' of_ the Volunteer" so I hope everyone will get involved somehow whether in newspaper, the radio station, the drama club or the' sports. The more involvement and school spirit, the better year for you and the university as a whole. This stands for the Freshmen as well as the upper classmen; ~so don't be shy. Anytime you have any questions, *comments, or ideas please feel free to let us know. _We «can't do anything about them unless “9 were of; 1983' Good luck to everyone and enjoy yourself! Sincerly, Kimberley Gass VP External‘ I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the freshmen to the university as well as welcome back all the returnees. This year has ‘ been named "This is the year of the Volunteer" at U.P.E.I. so I would like to encourage everyone to get out and get involved and make this one of the best years ever, both at U.P.E.I. and the Student Union. With everyone working _together I am sure we “will all have a most .enjovable year. Jimmy has good events some very _ scheduled for the Barn this year and I hope everyone will have an opportunity to enjoy at least some of these events. Financially, the new executive was left in a fairly good position by the outgoing executive at the end of April/83. The money left has enabled us to operate over the summer and get things underway in September. This year we had a pre—registration for orientation which went over very well. Again, this gave us up—front money to get orientation rolling. Over the summer the new executive and Heather have held many meetings and we are moving along quite nicely. I am sure that all of us working together can have a great year. Sincerely, Stephen BishOp Treasurer '
