There are several who are or who have been heads ot some ot the leading institu- tion; on the continent. while others occupy permanent positions on the staffs of the foremost schools ol learn- ing. Chief among them all is Dr. Jacob Gould Schurmaii, who is con- sidered one or the first educationista on the continent. Hers a. native of Free- town. l’.E.I.. where he was born on May 22. 1854. He atten hd Acadia. college for a time and ia 1875 won his tirst great prize, obtaining the Gilchrist scholarship of the university of Lon- don. Tnis was worth _$500 for three years. He studied at the university of London for two years graduating there with high honors and in 1877 and 1878 he was asludent at P.»ris and Edin- burgh. In June 1878, he won the Hibbert travelling fellowship with $1,000 a year for two years and open to all graduates of British universities. Over sixty men competed for this magniticient prize from Oxford, Cam- bridge, Edinourgh, Dublin, etc. Dur- ing the next atwo years he studied at Heidlburg, Berlin and Gottengen, and in 1880 was appointed professor oil English literature, political economy and psychology at Acadia college and in 1882 professor of metaphysics and English literature at Dalhousie. In 1886 he was appointed Sage professor of philosophy at Cornell university, Ithaca, N.Y., and later dean of the Sage school of philosophy. In 1892 he was promoted to ine presidency ot Cornell and has lilled the position with signal ability. He was in 1895 elected a member of the American association for tha advauc :ment of science. Hia career has been one of rapid pro- gress and a succession of triumphs. AS thinkers and logician he was head and shoulders above all his competitors for scholastic honors and students from all countries have been attracted to Cornell to sit at the feet of the earnest and elo- quent philosopher. He has published everal philosophical works which will bs referred to in another article. A number of maritime men are prom- inently itlentrfied wizh the staff of Hary- ard university. Professor S.
