The UPEI SUN,Thursday, November 6,l980,page h DECISION Cont. from page 3 Of course, they will still would essentially be a be part of the University, striving as much as before to contribute to its well being. Nevertheless, a separation will soon occur. The "fandly" will hence- forth be divided. Jim Kelly, Classics — I anuunhappy with the decision because I am afraid that given the actual atnosphere of the university, it can leave Business Adminis- tration exposed to some of the serious dangers of overspecialization which would not be good for the business training itself. It can also grant too big a voice for business in the budget and administra- tion of a school which Feedbag Dear Editor What is happening to this University? After three long weeks of pro- posals, petitions and reams of red tape, the _Senate has finally faced the "Business School Issue" with a vote. Frankly, it seens that the "issue" has been greatly blown out of pro— portion. Nonetheless, the future of UPEI's structure was decided by a single vote, not a majority. One voteli That vote might have cone fnmn the Registrar, Michael Hennessey, who grace- fully abstained, or it could have come fronaa student senator who was absent! It is frightening to think that a deciding or at least, a tying vote was not placed by the people who should care the most about this university's future - the students!!! Now this is not to say that the new Business School of UPEI will be the end of this arzxianic ccnummity. Quite the contrary, our new school of Business may raise UPEI's level of populari- ty and it's standards. But how are we to know? Where will we be in 5 or 10 years? .Let us hope that this move fulfills the best of it's purposes. Let us hope that this change will result in good will and connunication, not in chilled isolation, For liberal arts school. We have been unwilling or unable to comnit our- selves to a core of liberal studies and withr out that connitment, we have no true direction for our overall policies and very little defence against the vagaries of the supply and denand of the marketplace. Frank Ledwell - Dean of Arts I, for one, think the change especially healthy for the Faculty of Arts. we can now carry out our mandate to our students in a spirit of unanimity. we will be forced, perhaps, to be a bit more competi— tive and to do a better job than we ever have. But.we welcome that if the latter cones to pass, what of UPEI? Will we be able to call this in- stitution a university? or a feeder college for the professions? Can we call it a university now? What insurance is there for the graduates that their degrees won't be meaning— less if this place goes » defunct 10 years down the road? ' Where did you get your B.Sc UPEI ‘ Is that a university? Does it have a science department? Not any more, 7 Oh, I see , well...’ What do we do if socio- econd dc trends change and we are stuck with a school of business with only twenty students? And what about the here and now? Next semester, will Business students be encouraged _(obligated) to take courses outside their own field? With all due respect to the Senate, and those concerned persons on both sides of the issue, I merely wish to express a concern for the future of this acadenuc insti— tution. Now that we do have a school of business, what does that mean? Is it merely a theoritical structural change and a nice new name? Or does it imply more for this university, and we the students of UPEI? Heather MacDougall challenge. Of course, we will con— tinue to contribute to the liberalizing ccnmrment in the education of each student at our university. This change does not affect that mandate in any way. Leon Ioucks, Chemistry Chairman - I agree with the Senate decision to separate Business Admin. from the Arts Faculty. Some people are very uptight about the decision, but in the innediate future no changes will occur in the courses. The budget won't suffer, but nevertheless it gives timn1(Business Admin.) an edge to have representatives on certain decisionwnaking crmnnittees. Don MacEwen, Engineering Cllai n It is a good thing for any department to gain school status which has progressed like Business. has. As for professional schools, if the numbers are there, they are justi- fied in existing. I think the decision will improve the intmnaxif the University, in that it may have scne hnpact in attracting students, and it may gen- erate more involvement with the ccmmmity. The fact that the uni- nversity was split half and half is almost a personal think with scne of the faculty neubers. Rev. T. MacLellan-Religious Studies Chairman Educationally and ideally I would prefer to see Business remain in the Faculty of Arts. it would make for a better liberal arts education, espe- cially for the business stu- dents. i'would prefer a one Dean administrative setup which would achieve better integration. l was not sur- prised by the closeness of the vote. I'm not sure the best reasons for separating were given. The decision was not made on the basis of good strong argument. it was decided for other rea- sons. I did not go to the Senate meeting because i * Dislike confrontation poli- tics.
