In the days when the Conservatives
were in power the duties on coal oil were
singled outfor strong and constant con~
demnation. Since the Liberal party
came into power they have indeed re-
duced the duty to some extent-perhaps
one cent per gallon-but have come tar
short of what the country had a reason-
able righttoexpect of them in that re-
( greatly reduced.
l The situation is brieily this:-In one or
two counties of Ontario there are oil
v wells, many in number but ot compara-
tively small productive oapacity, which
am only snmcient to produce about one
half the oil required tor consumption in
_ the country, and generally of an inferior
quality to that imported. In Iwi) we im- L

produced in Canada 11,883,627 gallons. In.

foreign oil was entered at the custom
house was 15 cents, and the value of the 4

In addition to the duties on imported T

pection fees, etc. which go to swell the
price to consumers. Moreover the Can-
.idian oil wells are mainly controlled by
the Standard Oil Company ot the United
