Being seriously frightened, the would-be tenant took the re- nired oath, and the people departed without Line him any farther violence. The incident oreated much excitement and amusement in the neighborhood. — = Meavness Extraorpinary.—-The Patriot, of Saturday last, contains a short paragraph stating that the speech of Hon. L, H. Davies, during the short session of 1879, was stolen from that delectab!e sheet. Now, what are the facts’ Oneof the enterprising sub editors of the P‘riot went to the official Reporter of the House, whom he kaew, had taken a full report of Mr. Davies’ speech, and piteously begged for alarge portion of the said report! The Re- porter good naturedly complied with the re- quest, as he had frequently done en former occasions. for the same party, and read to the sub-editur.—who took notes of the same—the portions of the report for which he asked. The conduct of t':e Pa/riet’s sub-editor, in refer- ence to this matter, is simply contemptible, and beneath any respectable journalist. Dur- ing the sessi.. of 1878, the same official re- porter, whom he now attacks, took the trouble to transcribe, at his request, a full report of the Budget Speech in advance of the Parlia- mentary Reporter, for publication in his paper, inorder tu oblige him. Behold the grateful return which the reporter now receives at his hands! Shame upon the Patriot! More might be stated respecting this matter, but, forthe present, we will not extend our re- marks. Ux Saturday uight, at 11 o'clock, a fire broke out in Mr. William Larter's shoe store, south side Queena Square. ‘‘ Big Donald” seunded the alarin, and the steam engines went to the scene with commendable des- patch. The fire originated in the upper or third flat of the store, and when first discov- ered was but slightly burning. A gentleman eredibly informs us that the greatest blaze to seen in the apartment came from a box containing roofing felt and other material, and ‘might have been extinguished—on his ar- rival—with a small quantity of water. But desired quantity of water was not obtin- able, and the fire rapidly spread aleng the in- terior, and those present had to make a des @eut to the lower flat. Mr. Larter’s stock was then remevel te Mr. Nelms’ book store, and the stock of Mr. Boreham—who occupied * premises alsongside (also as a shoestore) —Was removed to the Market House. The ‘ames soon burst through the roof, and at times threatened to destroy the wooden build- ‘gs by which the burning one was bounded. But the firemen werked admirably. The confined the flames te the building in whic hey originated, and extinguished them short- after night. The roof of the shop occupied y Mr. Larter was entirely consumed, as was ak of the roef of the store eccupied by Mr. reham. Mr. Larter’s loss, we learn, is small, being chiefly in shoemaking machinery, Material, etc, Mr. Boreham’s stock was en- rely saved. ‘Ihe shop occupied by Mr. rter is owned by Mrs. Stamper, and the one ae by Mr. Boreham is owned by Richard arts, Esq. Both are insured. a -Guliheantdion ae ak Remedy for Hard Times. L« Stop spending 80 much on fine clothes, rich food and atyle.
