, fli’l‘coy Place 1* , If just wasn't our year » It is said that self pre- servation is the first law of nature...we found out last week that we had made a tremendous error of om- ission in our last column when we did not Comment on the girl's field hockey vic- tory and feared for our saf— ety when we encountered a group of them in the gym. To set things straight, so that we can go in peace, they had beated U. de Monc— ton l - 0...Sandra Dunsford's fourth shutout of the sea: son! We don't think any other U.P.E.I. goalkeeper in any sport has ever app- roached this-remarkable rec- ord. This feat catapulted the Lady Panthers into-the playoffs where, we regret to report, they were edged outlinetheufirst round 1‘— O tofiDZlfiéusié35€HEUévEfitfiaIB champions.”In the éonéolat- ion round they also lost to U.N.B. by the.same score. We think they had a tremen— dous season and Coach Barb Mullally and her team are to be congratulated on their showings againSt more exper- ienced teams and we expect great things from them next' year., ‘ 7 St. F.X. 39 U.P.E.I. 21 To quote Tommy Corcoran; "It would have been nice to end it all with a win" but it just was not in the cards and we think, we were just beaten by a better team. Our boys got off to a bad start and trailed 21 f 9 at the‘ half. They staged a mild comeback and pulled up to 30 r 22‘but once again, it just wasn't our day. We were pleased that, in his last game Grant Canvin showed he still has the arm that shool the league last year and we thought, he had a _good game. It was also the last game for Doc Blanchard, Glenn Claybourne, Marty Cole, Tommy Corcoran, Doug Hope, John Klub, Les Parsons and Al Stoddard. We will miss. them and hope, after grad- uation, we will see them around. Congrats to the Student Union for present— ing these players with pen and pencil sets to mark their final appearance as players. We heard over the C.B.C. the other morning, an interview with someone from the Athl- etic Dept. of Dalhousie. This chap was criticising the recruiting activities of ‘some Maritime Colleges...he gave, as an example, one in Nova Scotia which had but one or two Bluenoses on its Football team! He questioned whether this University was giving a fair chance for athletic participation to the students from its home province. We consider his criticism a valid one: We, by no means, wish to imply that we resent non—Islanders We think the proportion gr- eater on our basketball and hockey teams...also on the Women’s Field Hockey where we think the scouting for one real goal-scorer would give us quite a boost! We questioned one member from the criticised University and he excused the fact by claiming that they just did not get boys from Nova Sco- tia going to their Univers- ity so what were they to do? We, frankly, are skeptical of his explanation. 'In hockey, as this is be- ing written, we know only scores. We lost two games in an exhibition series in I New Glasgow...4 — 2 to Dal.‘ f» and 3 - 2 to Acadia. These were the first two games of the season for our boys so we will not panic. We hope there will be some activity before the season opens here against Memorial on the 16th and 17th. ’ As a final thought...we think it is about time that offensive cheer of U.P.E.L. was dropped and something less obsCene take its place. It doesn't take any brains to utter profanities or to curse...but also the thought ,occurred to us yesterday that its final note is one of frustration...in other words this cheer(??) is one for CADRE, NOVEMBER 5, a 1974, PAGE 9 mm PHOTO BY GORDON COFFIN LOSERS,...our suggestion is that we get a song, slogan, or whatever you might call it, that would go along with WINNING...we recall, for in— stance, how much of a rally— ing cry was the old S.D.U. "When the Saints go Marching in".....Why they even played it in church!!!!! and we note that S.M.U. and St. F.X. adopted (or stole) it as soon as U.P.E.I. was formed. Think about it. 4,3,; WOMEN'S .
