(ener) DES ao _ DEBATE Debating Society of the University of Prince Edward Island Welcome, new and returning students. We hope you had a great summer and that 1989-90 will be your best academic year ever. We would also like to suggest a way to make this year even bet- ter! The UPEI Debating Soci- ety offers fun, socialization, and learning valuable communication skills. We have an exciting year planned, one which promises to be among the best ever! Before we can have a successful year, however, we need one more essen- tial element — new members. We are looking for people who are in- terested in learning the skills of debating and public speaking. Wh debating? ‘You can de- velop some of the most useful and rewarding skills of your university experience, and have a great time while doing it! First is the social aspect. By joining our society you will have an opportunity to meet new friends, not only at UPEI, but also at other Canadian Univer- sities, through participation in intervarsity tournaments. Sec- ond is the personal development. Communication and __ think- ing skills will help you throughout your life. In our weekly practice debates we work on iproving log- ical thinking, argument construc- tion, public speaking, and spon- taneity. With a sense of humour, of course. 5 In addition to the personal satisfaction of improving these — skills, you’ll be better equipped — to find a good job after gradua- © tion. In many careers, the ability | to communicate effectively and to persuede colleagues and clients is highly prized. Debating is a difficult art, but one which is infinitely rewarding. It makes no difference if youve never spoken in public before. We | are all learners, at different levels. As soon as regular meetings have begun, plans will be made to organize a workshop for novice debaters. This will introduce the nuts and bolts of formal debate style, probiding a forum for be- ginners to try their hand at de- bate. Our meetings are held every Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Main Bldg.
