Sa . 2 ae. 1 AR Elman MISCELLANEOUS. PETROLEUM AS FUEL. | The experimenta which for several months have beet in progress at Boston, looking to the auc- cessful application of petroleum as fuel for stem | ships, have been watched with much interc t, and their results have been very ipertant. These | resnits, as claimed by the invenior of the eystem tader trial, are a saving of four or five to one in space required for the sterage of fuel, and + at) leest five-aixths of the labor required for feeding aud tending the fires, to say nothing of the actual cost, which depends upon the relative prices of coal aad cif. Application was made to the Seere- tary of the Navy, in Novembor last, for oppor tunity to test the practicability of petroleum as fue! spor a Government vessel. The Department had already, in 1862, appointed a committee of gaval engineers te experiment upen this sibject, and upon this appheatwoo a board of three chief engineers was ordered to examine the proposed eipertinents, the gunboat Palos being selected for the trial, Previous to entering upen the petro- feum trial, her engines were tested] wit! eval, thirty-six revolutions per winute, with a4 pounds of steam, being obtained. Iu the first petroleum teat thirty-four revolutions Were ob- tained with the sawe head of steam, and in the second test fifty revolutions with a pressure of thirty pounds. A comparison of the weight of the oi! aud the coal showed that one pound of oil had dene the werk of eight pounds of coal, and the general comparison of weight has shown one barre! of petroleum to be equal te one ton of coal Crude vils are used of a gravity ranging from 31 tu 47 degeees. The oil is first conveyed directly te a cast-iron retort aud vaporized by means ef a slight fire vaderveath. Due proportions of steam) and cowuvn air are incorporated with the vapor, and the gasses thus evolved constitute the feel. This burne with 40 intense beat, and the combue- tiow is #0 perfect that no swoke is visible at the evutiet of the suwkestack. The Gre te under perfect control, and there being nv ashes, clinker nor refuse coal to clog the fires, they way be run an indefinite time without stoppage tur cleaning. The buruing of eval upon the Palos required the services of twenty-one | firemen aod coalpassers; with the petroleum only three men were needed. This same principle may be applied tu locomutives as well as steamers, and, | indeed, upon the Franklin and Warren Railroad, in Western Pennsylvania, a petroleum burning | apparatus has been successtully employed. The | petreizum regions are waking still further use of | the oil by applying the wecesaary apparatus to the fires of the eugine houses at Cre wells, thus saving a very large outlay for wood or coal. During the | height of the speculative fever, when dv zens of wells were being sunk upon each acre in the} favorite localities, all the cual for the engines was | transported for wiles over trighttul roads ot great | wear acd tear of berses and waguns, and at a corresponding cost to the well owner. Nearly all | i thia great expeuse might have been saved bad an ase of petroleum for fuel beew pruct-cally unuder- stood. The experiments at Busten are tu be} continued, and petroleum tested upon a sea voyage. | The importance of the subject should insure for it | @ rigid and persistent iuvestigativu. Sho id the | revult of the experiments continue te be «atistac- tory, the carrying capacity of our steamships will be largely increased, while their payrolls way be greatly diminished, coaling stations may be dis- coptinned, aud a Vessel may leave New York with enough fuel on beard tu propel ber around the world.—N. Y. Tribune ee A liquor prosecution tu Manchester, Conn, has developed sume queer facts in relation to the | working of the secret octer of Good Templara The principal witness tur the prosecution was ene of the spies of tht order. Lt seems that they have a “ detective department" with a morale adout on a par with that of Baker's. Rev. H. 5. | Plstt, of West Winsted, is the chief, aud his sub- ecdinates are bound ou oath to obey his orders) without question. They are alse sworn to secrecy, bet if thie particalar detective kept anything | secret he must have an awful tale to tell. Under the directiva of his reverend superior, he would put up at a hotel, under a tsise name, tipple a | while at the bar, go out and take a drink ata salven, return and try a different kind of liquor, end when this amusemeut became tiresome report te beadqusrters. The “ specimens” which is secured io quantity, were handed over to Rev. Mr. Platt tor mince pies, probably. But most of the detective werk was done by personal drink- ing. They cenld vot obtain convictions so easily wea liquor wae bought by the flask. The justice would taste of a good article of Santa Cruz, and prenvuses it blackberry syrup, much to the ind-gnation of the houest Templar, who evidently Knew whereof be spoke. This innocent testified that he did not kuow the taste of liquors when he entered the business, but thut, by drinking from three te four times a day, he had become tulerahly or. Still, his head was not very strong. had te lie by a day or so, new and then, to recuperate bis energies, be said; aud we may believe dim, siace he testified that be would drink wheo others offered to treat; that he would throw dice for drinks, and that he didn’t hesitate to «ambie ia the saloons. This man, whe indulged in such dissipations without stint, was, it must be remembered, a sworn mewber of ao organiz- @tiouw which denounces liquer as an abomination. And this suciety was paying bis expenses in the drinkizg and gambling line, and giving him two dollars a day for bis virtuous services, which were directed by the Rev. Mr. Plait. [t would be interesting tu place the ministerial chief detec- tive himeeif upon the stand, and elicit bis ex- planation of suct pertormances in the interest of abe tewperance cause. How much good sense, wot bo say sincerity, is there in a syste which actually encourages drunkenness in ite ageuts fer the purpose of euforcing a law which public epiuiva dues nut sustaiu! —_—- bo ---— Mk GLADSTUNE AND Mr. Disreatt.—In an a@ttiolc vn political incunsistency, the Pall Mail Gazette thus compares the two English politicians who are perhaps the two strongest illustratious of the subject :— “ Were it nut that he ia a great parliamentary wtuct, and (hat Ute errors are us serious a national Joss as bis achievements are a great national benofit, the progress of Mr. Gladstone's mind would be as curious a thing to Watch as sny ex- isting subject tor psychological study. One thing da certain, the fear of * Hansard’ will never deter hiuw from forming aud avuwing each frenu change ju bie epiniwus. “ As to hie formidabie rival, to quote ‘ Hansard’ $e him ot bimw is abut as profitable as tu blame an actor for net wearing the same dress and putting on the same expression of countenance in Hamlet aod in Romeo. Consistency, theoretical and practical alike, is not bis line. To use the slang sexing of the day, he dues net gu in for it. Pro- ‘babiy Mr. Disrvali never lust oue hour of his vatural rest through suffering from the throes of 80 antious heart, striving to reconcile things ap- rentiy inconsistent, under the conviction that ical consistency in belief is ae much a duty to thuse who can attain it as hovesty in purpsve and truth mw conversativn. And thie ie periapa oue reasen why iu all these bis last transformations the House has preferred tu laugh to listening to acy serious exposure of Lhe past purliawentary career of its succvsstul ‘Wizard of the East.’ Transformations are the order uf the day on the aime stage, and why uvt on the stage of the Bouse vi Commons.” ——— —- ae A company has been formed in France, with capital of three million francs to search for three Spanish galleous, which were sunk by the Euglish tleet at the commencement of the last ‘century. The galieons in question were re- turning from Mexico and a ou board about five million piastres. They are still at the bot- tom of the sea, and several utlewpts to come at the treasure have failed. The number of years this invaluable Ointment has stood the test of public upinion, (and the longer | known the better appreciated) is a testimony of it- self wore convincing than anything that could be written in praise of its truly wonderful healing properties. In the cure of bad legs, bad breasta, | sores, wounds, and ulcers, its effect is marvellvus. For ring-worm, scald-bead, scrofula, and d svases ot the skin generally, there is no remedy to be com- pared to it When assiduously rubbed upon the skin (previously well bathed in warm water) this | Ointment is quickly absorbed into the system, aud | cleanses, in its passage, every part te which it is applied. Glandular Swellings, Mumps, Bronchitis, Quinsey, Sore | Throats and Diptheria. In any of the above diseases, immediate and per- | manent relief is obtained by effectually rubbing this | detergeut Ointment, twice a day, upon the neck, chest and back. Its acts upon the very mainsprings of lite; for tarough the glands pass all new matter required fer the body’s reparation and al) old par ticles detrimental to its preservation. The Uint- ment, used conjoi: tly with Holloway’s Pills, will | act so searchingly and certainly as to effect cures in the must hopeless cases. Rheumatism, Lumbago, Con- tracted and Stiff Joints. Many thou-ands of martyrs trom the above com. | plaints have found life almost unsupportable; yet, if gi lloway’s Vintwent be briskly and per-everingly rubbed upon the parts affected, ease may be sifely guarantved, especially i! the pores of the skin be previously uopened by iomentations with warm water. The gross humors require expulsion from the sys- tem; it is therefore peeessury to have recourse to Holloway’s admirable Pills, which, by purifying am. strengthening the system, yreatly assist the upera- tion of the O.utwent aud facilitate snd confirm the cure Bad Legs, Bad Breasts, and Ul-| cerations of all kinds. There is no medicinal preparation in the world} wh.ch may be so thoroughly relied upon, in the treatment of the above ailments, as Holluway’s Ointment. Nothing can be sv simple er safe as the wanuer in which it is applied, or its action op the bedy, both locaily and constitutionally. The Oint- ment, rubbed around the part affected, enters the pores justas saltenters meat. It quickly penetrates to the suurce of the evil and drives it trom the system. Erysipelas and Scrofulous Sores. In all irritations of the skin, sores, ulcers, burns or scrotulous enlargements of any kind, Holloway’s Ointment presents a ready and easy means of cure. mation, removing stagnation, covling the heated blood, and checking all ucrimunious and unhealthy discharge. Diseases attendant on Childhood. Diseases incident to early life fall more ander the management of the mother than the medical man. Holloway’s Ointment should therefore be regarded by her us 4 “Household Treasure,’* us it never fails in bringing out the rash in measles and scarlatina; and for the removal of all skin diseases its effect is miraculous. Incases of whoopiug cough and croup, this invaluable Ointment should be rubbed twice a day upon the throat and chest, and | the youngest invalid wil! derive therefrom the most | soothing relief. Two or three of Holloways's famous Pills, reduced to a powder, will augment the cura | tive powers of the Unguent. j Both the Ointment and Pills should be! used in the following cases : Bad Legs Corns (soft) | Rheumatiom Rad Breasts Cancers jSeald Heads Burns omutracted and |Sure Nipples Banions Stl Joints Sore Throats Bite of Mosche-!Elephantiasis toes and Sand Fistalas Flies {gout Skin Diseases Scurvy Sore Heads Coco-bay Glandalar Swel-/Tumours Chiego-foot lings Ulcers Chilblains Lumbayo Wounds Chapped Hands |Piles Yuws Sold at the Establishment of Prorxssorn Hoxto- war, 244, Strand, (near Temple Bar), London; also by all respectable Druggists and Dealers in Medicines throughout the civilized world, at the following prices:—Is 14d, 2s 9d, 4s 6d, 11s, 22a and 33s each Pot. *,* There is a considerable saving by taking the larger size.
