It may not be pouible to appraise the value of the collection, in a -moment; but aha can engage a second opinion if she is dissatisfied with the figure. Antonio Alvarez shall come. He is our man and a great friend of my own. The hoard in any case will represent museum pieces in virtue of its history; but no museum. either at.Liina or in Europe. can pay any considerable sum. The world is hard up and the people's bellies have got to be fill- ed before the museum shelves." They thanked him gratef-ully. I ”Spiendid of you. sir!" said Tom. "That will put everything right. in visit Anita Pardo to-morrow and fix it up. Then we'll come along to her and bring the silver box and a. locksmith to open it under your eyes. She won't raise any questions when she knows you are controlling the business," wared Jacob. "I will see you at your officer to-morrow, Tom, and then we will talk about Mount Ataio. Now its time I went to bed; but your wonderful story is going to keep me awake." He turned to Jane. "When these matters are onf your mind. you must visit my birth. Jane. Do not bring these gPhiliatvinee. They will only be in the way. I know instantly when a visitor is barred." Tom and Angus protested and ere long they took their leave. "Wonder if he'll buy the mine,' i said Tom. "He's been such a sport. that I'd hate to refuse him; but somehow I dont. feel frlghtfuily keen about parting with it." EERNANDEZ AND THE MINE on the following day Aylmer learned that Signor Fernandez was not going to purchase his property. He came, however, with an offer. Jacob emerged from an amazing motor car at the appointed time, presently drank the dry sherry awaiting him, lighted a cigar and laid his proposition before the young man. "Keep the mine, Tom," he be- gain. "It will give you an intelli- gent occupation and. assuming that 'your Jane likes Peru, you can bring her back when you have mar- ried her. Lima is an exceedingly healthy city. as you know. and she will be free of my aviaries- a privilege the young woman has brains to appreciate. "Now touching Mount Ataio. I will not take it off your hands. but I may tell you the reports are exceedingly favourable and the possi' "es generous. With my pen- chant for silver I will therefore, if you approve, Join you and share "So much for that then," ans-' THE GUARDIAN. CHARDOTTETOWN'4, your mine. The mine ianguishes from old age. It is behind the times, out of date. utterly ineffi- ciont. But, thus are defects that can be, cured. The silver is there waiting for you to reach it-so my people assure me. They are as posi- tive as any mineralogists can be that far finer grades of ore lie in your dominions than any you have reached: but at your present rate of progress it will not be reached in my limited time. probably not even in your own longer span. "So this I will do. On the basis of fifty-fifty as they say nowadays, I will recondition your mine, in- stall adequate machinery, double the staff and make it a going con- cern." ”It;'-would cost you as much is the show is worth, sir," said Tom. "I think otherwise. This is a businc transaction and being an old man in a. hurry, I should not make such an offer if I felt in any serious doubt about it. All mining is. of course, a gamble; but I am prepared to do this. Now, as to your side. you will ar- gue that to halve your returns is not a particularly pleasing pros- pect. But be under no delusion as to that. My reports leave nothing to be desired and I am prepared to say that, under the new dis- pensation, your half interest in the mine will very swiftly far exceed your whole present returns from it. I suggest that you take my reports to London with you and submit them to your advisers. Jane told me you are going home to be married very shortly. Then you can cable 'Yes' or 'No', and I. shall proceed at once on the proposed scale if you agree and the legal business be put in hand." "It sounds too good to be true Sir." "No-otherwise I should not have told you. You shall have the re- ports before you sell, and you will find them engaging reading. As to Signora Pardo. I will be at her direction”the day after tomorrow at noon unless I hear to the con- t.i'ary." "I'm seeing her this evening and will let you hear." i To be Continued PRETORIA (CP) - Building plans valued at 235,000,000 were passed for the nine principal cities of the Union of South Africa in the first seven months of 1953, accord- ing to current figures.
