Rumors of tllc occurrence had been in circulation lor several days in the European capi- tals, but were received with scepti- cism. _ Emperor Menellk was 69 years old, having been born at Ankobar on July 19, 1844. He _ was a son of Haeli Melicotli, King of Shoe., and was said to be a' direct descendant of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, When his father died Menelik was on- ly 12 years old. The throne of Nbys- sinia was seized by Kassal, governor of Kondor, who took Menellk captlvq and proclaimed himself emperor, but Mcnelik escaped and became ruler ot the Kingdom of Shea. Menelik became famous chiefly in connection with the war between Abyssinia and Italy, when he organ- ized an army of 70,000 men with whom he defeated the Italians in s. series of battles and then dictated his own terms of peace. Oue_oi the fiercest battles of the war was fought at Adowa on March 1, 1896, when a crushing defeat was inflicted upon tha Italians, who lost more than 4,300 whites and 2,000 native troops killed and wounded, while 2,500 of themin- cluding 1,600 whites were taken pri- soners by the Abyssinlsns who ad- mitted that their own loss was 31,000 men.
