The facts collected by the Weather~ Bureau show that the loss of life by light- ning in the United States last year was greater than in any year since statistics _ began to be collected. Five h\U1dl‘¢d *md sixty-two persons were killed instantly or suffered injuries from which death soon resulted, and 820 persons were injured, many of them suffering from physical shock, others from painful burns and others from temporary Dir- alysis of some part of the body. The most common form of injury resulting from lightning seems to be the paralysis of arms or legs. In Professor Henry’s report on the casualties of the year he says there were some remarkable escapes from death. In some cases the clothing of the person struck was set on fire and the body WBS seared or burned; however, complete re- covery followed. It is not easy to explain how these per- sons escaped death, and there is still much uncertainty as to the maximum voltage that can be applied to thehuman body without fatal result. In some cases of death the body of the person struck showed no external marks of the dis- charge and death seems to have resulted from complete collapse of the _cellular tissues. In many cases, howev er,” the cause of death was made apparent by the discoloration and burning of various parts of the body. One singular case was that of two brothers who were killed while driving together in a. dog-cart. They were found lying side by side on the roa.d,justa.sthey had fallen out- of the back of the vehicle. The elder brother had no external sign of injury. The skin of the younger brother was burned in a. number of small circular holes over the chest and abdomen and the back was burned from the neck to the hips. Phe metalliccollar stud was fused and the skin beneath it was deeply burned. The waistcoat and shirt were charred, but the coat was uninjured. No be seen. _ t I ‘It is usually suppossed that the _damage is_;j__done by a single bolt, but it is often 'dlmcult to explain the casualties on this theory. This in one case last year a span of horses attached to a. wagon and a mm in the rear of the wagon were killed, the horses and the man, was not seriously hurt. This case. and others of a similar W§£iICSiok|f`i Using Dr. Chanda Nerve Food. itany children are pale, weak, and hloodless from their birth. Many others SUMMERSIDE MARKETS' have their blood and nerves exhaust- ed, and their systems broken down by the ravages of disease, or as the re- sult of over-study at school. Dr. Cha_se’s Nerve Food is the ideal treatment for children. It supplies the very elements which are lacking ln the pale, weak, and nervous. It restores the cc-lour and richness to the blood, lnvlgorates the nerves, and builds up measles, scarlet fever, and such all-‘ ments, it is of incalculable worth. Mrs. Stephen Dempsey, Albury, P, E, county, Ont., writes:-“ My little grand- 1 daughter, nine ,vears old, was very psig and weak, and had no appetite. she had 8. tired, wornout appearance, and was delicate and sickly. got some of Dr. Chase's Nerve Foodqor her, and It has helped her very much.
