LOPES sar. 5 Dear GEM, First, allow me to wel- come you back for another year. I look forward to an- other year of your paper, and trust it will be of com- parable or superior qual- ity as those published last semester. There are two items that I would like to see mentioned in upcoming is- sues. I didn’t feel that they warranted a “Letter to the Editor” but thought I would mention them any- way. Firstly, as you are prob- ably — aware, member from Hong Kong recently made a very sub- stantial contribution to the “Challenge of the Eighties” campaign. I suggest that a thank-you from the stu- dent body is in order. (Per- haps one representing the student body as a whole, or a petition of actual signa- tures 777) Secondly, the parking “prob- lem” on campus. Now, the problem is not with the ac- tual parking facilities but rather with the parkers. I have about had it with peo- ple literally parking their cars wherever they want. Already this year, I have seen cars parked in des- ignated “RESERVED” ar eas, on the lawn, on top of painted cross-hatched ar- eas of the lot, in lanes sup- posed to be used as con- nector lanes between park- ing lots, and the list goes on. ‘I know the security personnel cannot. possibly keep track of all of the “culprits.” However, I do know that in the past they have towed cars that were improperly parked. Also, why not initiate a system of tickets and fines like our “friends” down town ? Perhaps I would be more sympathetic if there weren’t enough park- ing spaces on campus (as is the case downtown, but that’s an entirely different. issue that I won’t get into here). The fact is there are more than enough spaces, what with all the parking lots around. The problem, I suppose, is that not every- one can have a space right next to the door, or in the top level of the lot. If these bums are too lazy to walk a bit, then I suggest they cab == Page 4 an alumni . Dexar Editor: ] thinzk you ar some THAT PA wi. fe kind of Communist. Thanks for your time, and I hope to see these is- sues addressed in upcoming issues. Dedicated GEM Reader. Mr. Editor: I would like to com- ment on the UPEI appoint- ‘ment calendar that is be- ing passed out at the Cam- pus Bookstore this year. It seems that whoever orga- nized the calendar thinks that this university revolves around the Atlantic Veteri- nary College. Except for the sports teams, the let- ters “UPEI” never appear on any of the ‘pages. For example, if one were to look at the square for Sept. 10, one would see Non- AVC intro-level classes be- gin”; or Dec. 17, “AVC and non- AVC. examinations”. IfI were a visitor to this campus and picked up one of these calendars, I would assume that the AVC was — the only important faculty here and that every other Gotta beef? faculty was “just. a bunch of trivial courses”. What ever happened to UPEI as a whole? In the last few years, it seems that the AVC has been taking over this campus and pushing the rest of the faculties into a corner. I’m not saying that the AVC should not have come here because it is an im- portant part of UPEI, but why must it always have precedence over other fac- ulties such as Business or Science? Aren’t they just as important? I suggest that from now on, this campus be thought of as UPEI, with the AVC being only a part of the picture just like everybody else. A Concerned Student.
