no experience of any fiscal system
hut that of protection.
In this fact. lies one of the strong-
est bulwarks of protection today-it
is the only form of tariff which the
hulk of the electors know anything
about. To them it is as if it had al-
ways been, and they passively accept
it as something that has come to
stay and which it would be quite
fruitless to try to escape from. So
the pioneers of Prince Edward Is-
land accepted the absentee landlord
and his exactions until the burden
became almost intolerable, and then
they sct about finding a remedy and
soon became their own masters.
Their descendants are now awaken-
to the fact that where the old-time
landlords levied dollars oil them the
protected interests are now levying
tenfold as much.
Especially' has the protective sys~
tem hit the farmer hard. It has
greatly increased the cost of every-
thing he has to buy while but rarely
increasing the price- of what he has
to sell. It has been a main cause
for depopulating the rural districts.
It has made it impracticable for the
fu.riiicr_ or the farmer’s wife to ob-
tain any hired help at prices which

About the strongest argument that
can be put forward in defence of pro-
tection froni the Prince Edward Is-
land standpoint, runs something like
this: Protection has built up the coal
and steel industries of Sydney, and
our farmers find a good market there
for their products. The premises here
laid down may he challenged. Long
before we had protection in Canada
much greater industries than those of
Sydney in both, coal and steel had
grown up under .free trade in Great
Britain.
Protection did not create the coal,
or the iron ore which are the bases
of the Sydney industries. Protection
did not surround the coal and iron
of Sydney with a comparatively bar-
ren agricultural country, rendering it
necessary for the dwellers in Sydney
to huy their food supplies from
abroad. lt is not therefore quite fair
to credit the Sydney Market alto-'
gether or principally to protection;
And what is the advantage of the
rl-ydney market to the l’. E. Island
farmer, when the farmers of Western
Ontario can scnd`their products ten
or twelve hundred miles to Sydney
at the same or less cost than the Is-
