Place to the Peesident' of the Student Union. Having completed one year with the Student Union, I feel I should make some form .of written comment. Enclosed is a statement from 31 Dec. 73 which has been projected to the end \ of the Student Union fiscal year, 28 Feb. 74. I regret to comment that it does not show a rosy picture inasmuch as we will be behind about 14,000. if we pay UPEI the 12. per student as we are committed to do. This sit- uation, it seems to me, is edue largely to a decreased attendance at the Univer- sity, rising costs, adher- ence to previous customs and continued spending at the level of the larger registration enjoyed in pre- vious years. In round fig- ures, an attendance of 1 00 students gives us an income from this source, of $56,000. Unfortunately, little of * this is under the actual control of the Executive in— asmuch as there are certain cost§_which MUST be met. Some of these are: UPEI (1400xx $12.) 16:800- Salaries staff 18,500. Executive 7,500. Insurance 1,500. Heat (Barn) 2,000. Light 800. Telephone 1,000. l anin Barn) 00- C e g ( ugrfgfir_e , These figures are approxim- ateuy but close enough for you to see that there is but little leeway afforded even when the S.U. fees N0“! me 10% StudentfiDisoount - \ Must be able to show your student card ,at. SLACK RACK 35 University Avenue Charlottetown q‘ \ are augmented by the few - activities which‘shou a profit. You can then pro- bably agree with me when I_ can see but little hope of i an improvement if we conti- nue to spend $1,900. on Orientation, $2,000. on Wi— nter Carnival, Sponsor big" bands, maintain a radio station and neWSpaper at big losses and still have no V great interest in making a profit where if can be gai- ned...or to cut expenses where they can be reduced. There are several factors to be considered. I can only paint them out to you and poss1bly, to offer advice, but i believe the most imp- ortant thing is for all to face facts. My firsf'reccommendation {would be that unless suffie cient funds are collected from.Summer Students, the Student Union Office should be closed during'the Summer months. Nobody to be paid and no courses paid. I also believe that a budget should be submitted by each ck=ir~ man of a committee within\ the first month of his app- ointment and that the sub— miSSion should be checked by a‘Budget Committee which would pass on it considering the registration and income then in effect. All charges to tiis activity should be approved byvthe Chairman & once the limit of eXpendit- ure was reached the activi- ty should cease. With costs rising in all phases of‘activity it may, be that S.U. fees should be raised by $10., with the hope of increased regis- tration in September '74 it may be that the University ' may be willing to let the S.U. skip a year's payments ...particular1y is this - needed when it may be that Fitzgerald and Snow may_ be asking for the payment of the $4,500. which is still owing them. I would also advise that, .in my Opinion it would be prudent to have a meeting of'all candidates for the next election, direstly ' after nominations close, to advise them of the sit- uation so they may avoid impbssible promises on The high price of the mov- ie alone has also been a constant complaint, and usually heard strongest fr- om students, who no longer get a discount. The students of Nova Scotia have banded together to try and stop the injustice. They plan to boy- cott and picket all the th- eatres in the province till the price goes down. If they are successful it should ‘ be a very good example of what can be done to-remedy the situation-ie .
