Don’t get excited, though. This is not a rebellion. In fact, the move was largely Meincke’s idea. The chair position has been occupied by the University’s President since UPEI came into existence. But now, the consensus of Senate is that there should be a separation of administra- tion, represented by Meincke and academic policy-making. Meincke agreed that being chair “puts the President in a very difficult position" and that it would “be better to have a tough-minded parlia- mentarian with no other relationship to Senators. ” He added that the motion would put the President in a stronger position to make a case for or against a parti- cular motion. 0 This raised some questions as to the effect knowing the President supports a proposal will have on Senators’ willingness to speak openly.
