Things have changed considerably: sincel968. No longer do the majority of Islanders look upon Premier Alex Campbell as the new "messia ". Whether they are disillusioned with Campbell himself. the Liberal Party, the devel opment Plan or all of ‘ these, the trust inra "better day to come" is no longer there. In the 'space of three short years, the government, has managed to alienate the students, the farmers and a large segment of the labour population. This in turn has led to a growing mistrust among Islanders in general. ' Normally, in a situat 'EDGAR' ion like this. people would vote for the oppos ition party in the next election. But, really! George Key and the Con- srevatives? Most people realize that there is very little difference between the two establish ed parties. One might say the choice is between Bad and WOrse. What. choice is there, then? The New Democratic Party? For some this might seem to be the solution— if we ‘had one, that is. While therehave been rumors circulating about the creation of an N.D.P.. branch on P.E.I., nothing .has been done to any h ‘great extent. Even this alternative has been re— jected by some people. ~Controlled by American trade unions, aren't they Well, where does one turn? Should we spoil our ,ballots, as a sign of pro test? The possibility that concern ed individuals. running as independant candidates could create another force to compete with the established parties (party?) is very interest ing. Here would be a chance to get back to the basics of democracy.1‘ Powers—to-thefipeople, and” all that! Now is the time to start thinking about the next election. It could be something new for P.E.I.!
