A very entertaining meeting was held on the pight of February 25th, crowded with the inteliigence and elite of eurrounding who had before them the iuapiration of the pleasant countenance of the Rev. Mr. Millar, who occupied the chair. A very interesting aud wel! delivered programme took up the first part of the night as follows: Quartette—Never say fail by Misses Annie and Louisa Campbell and Alick aud Norman A Campbell. Reading —Mr Leshe McDoff. Recitation—Miss Louisa Campbell. Recitation—Elizabeth Coaner, Recitation—Mary Campbell. Recitation— N A Campbell. The debate was then opened the subject being “Woman's Rights.” It was opened by Mr. Ewen Campbell with a very eloquent and elaborate speech in favor of extending the franchise to the ladies. He was supported by Mesers, D. t Alick Campbell who the communily, B.C bell end contended that, as we have lady teachers, lady doctors and ladies im the legal pro- feasion, and also that physiologists have made the fact known to the world that the temale brain makes upin fineness of texture what it is deficient in werght as compared With that of man, they should have the privilege ot voting. These speakers were opposed by Messrs Robert McDuft, William 4ughes and N. A. Cempbell who argued that woman’s place is home where she should inspire minds of her children with good and noble ideas and thus send good men and women into the world; also that it would degrade ber and expore her to the vituperation of the vulgar sheald she go into the Legisla tive world. am} Our next night of meeting will be Friday | Marcb 4th, We will bave our monthly re view of the news of the world written and read by the Rev. A Madrid paper, El Pais, makes the ne Capes af | startling suggestion that all the Spanish— America should defensive alliance with Spain toresist United States eggres~ sion and insolence. It poiuts out that the Yankees are assuming s dictatorship in America that is intolerable, and that it can Only be met and euccessfully checked by an all-Spanish alliance like that suggested Naturally, the idea hasgreatly ex- cited our United States exchanges, which while professing to regard it as impossib'e still devote considerable space to it. Among others, the Ney York Mail and Exp-ees has this to say: “It is difficult conceive of anything more preposterous than this dream of an alliance between Spain and South Amer- caninfluenc>. Such are'ationship would be incorgruous and intolerable. I: might help Spuin, bat it would bea blight upon South American republics. Those coune tries, aftera more than a century of weari- some effort, are independent of the politi~ cal contro] of spain. and itis only by re= kpeaking republics of mee | solutely maining that iudepeudence that efer< | = hey can attain the prosperity and power to which they aspire. They are still hampered and handicapped in many ways by the survival of Spanish influence and custom in law and commerce, but these are gradually disappearing before the steady alvance vf modern ilea; and wherever th: y are weakest there wil! be fonnd the farthest advance of South American progress. The European influences which legitimately concern the welfare of the Southern republics are commercial and not politival; they do not radiate from Spain, but from England, Germany and other progressive nations, whose power would be vigorously asserted te prevent even the ssmblance of such an alliance as the Madrid dreamers propose. Spain mistakes the temper and purpose of the South American nations as gross- ly @: she does those of the United States.” And the New York Tribune, treating the matter more good-naturedlv, remarks: “A fine sample of the Castiie in Spain is that constructed by the newspaper, El Pais, in the form of a dream of a reunion of South America with Spain againet the United Siates, Such an a- liance, it says, would be the second po- wer in the wurld in popalation. That isto be douSted. South America has about 44,000,000 and Spaia 18,000,000; in all, say, 62,000,000. Leaving the British Empire, with its hundreds of millions, out of the calculation, Russia and the United States both considerably outnumber the proposed alliance. Moreover, some mil- lions of the Scuth Ameri‘ans are wild Indians. If they be omitted and ouly the civilized people counted, the new power would be inferior in population to Gers many and perhaps to Austria-Hungary 80 that, instead of being the second in the Tbe lecture will be illustrated by stereep- tican views.
