The case of Istevan Meszaros, Marxist theorist, literary critic, political scientist, philosophy teacher, teacher of philoso— phy and esthetics, is under review by a special committee, said York dean of arts John Saywell earlier this week. Meszaros, a British subject since 1965, comes from Hungary. He was a member of the 1956 provisional govern— ment and fled to Italy when the Russian Stalinists regained power in Hungary.. He has been teaching in the social science de- partment at the University of Sussex for the past six years. He Saywell has been negotiating with government officials since June, but would not comment on the talks. York president David Salter said Wednesday "the matter is being actively worked on. we're not engaging in public debate over the matter because we have found in the past that beyond a certain point, this does more harm than good." Neither knew when the review decision might be released. Meanwhile, accord- ing to Hill, Meszaros is waiting in London with his family for HESZAROS REFUSES HACKASEY'S OFEHR; SEEKS LAN ED wrn‘ r”, '.
