The nearest anniversary is that of the 98th, No-
vember 26th when` they will have been a year away
from home. There should be some fitting recognition
of the day. livcrybotly knows a number of 'l'.c boys
and a letter from home to show them that not only is

On the 13th of this month the Island’s largest unit
the 105th Battalion, will have been absent five montlis.
A “io5th Day” on that date with letters and reineiir
brances from the home friends -would be a worthy tri-
bute and a heartening one to our boys.
Letters froni_ the boys both in England and. at thc
front tell always of the gnawing hunger for news
from home. Every newspaper sent is eagerly read,
advertisements :uid all, while the scrapbooks from
the diifirent schools and the letters from friends aic
veritable treasures.
And there is onething that should not be forgotten
especially at the Christmas season. It is this: ,There
are some boys in all the units who receive little if any-
thing from their own homes, possibly some who have
no homes and no home friends. These, aswell as
those more happily situated, are doing their duty, -scr-
viiig their King and Country and are in every way
worthy to be remembered, worthy of otir respect,
worthy of our gifts, and any such would be even more
greatly :ipprecirited probably than are the regular con-
tributions from homes to loved ones. There are lonely
boys in all the units and certainly the lonelicst are
those who have no homes and no friends.
In writing letters to those whom we know these
others should be enquired after, their names and ad-
dresses secured and this followed by a kindly letter
and at Christmas ‘especially by a gift, be it ever so
small. The boys, those who have homes
and friends and those \vho have not, need all the en-

Borden, a Military Hospitals and Con-
valescent Homes Coinmlssiion, “to
deal with the provision of hospital ac-
commodation and' mllltai‘y convales-
cent homes in Canada for ofllccfrii,
non-commissioned officers and men of
-the Canadian Expedltlonary Force
who return invalldetl' from the front.”
The very able president of the Com-
mission is Sir James A. Lougheed,
and it has an efiloleut and enterpris-
ing secretary in Mi: E. ll. Scainmell.
The Commission has learned much by
experience, and is today undoubtedly
workliig on right lines. At first, tlile
general idea was that convalescent.
homes, where dlscliitrgeil' soltlllers
would' spend' a short time for rest and
refreshment, would* be the chief re-
quirement, unil scores ot’ houses and
hundreds of workers were placed at
the disposal of the Commission. But
this idea was soon dlspelled when lt.

disabled soldiers wus`n. more serlioiis
and lengthy business. Months or even
weeks spent. in the atmosphere of
such i1 home would tend' to injure ra-
thei' than strengthen the physical and
moral libre. Let us hear what Mr. J.
S. McLennan, a member. of -the Com-
mission, has to say on this subject in
his introduction to she Cominisislon's
special bulletin:-
The supply of coniforts whlcfil in
many cases were luxurious, the. relax-
ation of discipline-, the treating ot’
men as one treats a civilian pilitlont in
the interval between illness and' the
resuming of ordinary occupation,
which might do no harm if the ex-
perience wiis to be couiiiteil in days,
are most seriously d‘etrlmeiitiil to the
best interests of the men whfen ex-
t/ended over the prolonged periods
which have been found' unavoidable.
The first conception of the liomos
was thu/t they were places of relaxa-
tion; the right one which experience
has taught us to rcnlize ls that they
are places of rehabilitation. In other
words. we are changing as rapidly as
may be our convalescent homes into
hospitals where. ln tlte interests of
the men, their time will be fully occu-
pied, their physical restoration mad'e
as perfect as possible, and, from the
beginning, the had effects of idleness
obvlated by employment.
These are golden words whioli those
who are responsible for our wounded
veterans will do well to remember.

may be cured and return to the front;
but his case may be hopeless, so far
he may have to be sent buck to Can-
ada. When he arrives there he is tak-
en in hand at the port of ni rival by
the Military Hospitals Commission.
It' he belongs to Class I., that ls, lit he
ls unfit for overseas service, but able
receives 15 days’ pay and -transporta-
tloii to his home, together with free
meals enroute. If he belongs to Class
Il or III., that ls, if lte has to receive
i'urth):r treatment as a. convalescent,
or has a permanent disability of any
kind. he is Passedou to the appropri-
ate institutions. If he is an ordinary
convalescent he will be sent to the
hospital nearest to his homo, but if
he requires special, such as orthopae-
d'lc treatment, he will go where that
is supplied.
The Educational Feature. '
What I wish especially to emphasize
ls that at all theseihosplitals, schools
are held where training of an elemen-
tary and non-vocational character is
given in English, French; mechanical
drawing, arithmetic, wood-carving. &c.
These classes are"opgn to all iminntos,
whether they are able to return to
their former occupations or not. But,
from these homes and hospitals, the
men who are not so able can bewiis-
charged. to technical lustltutlions, ag-
ricultural colleges, schools of telegra-
phy, &c., where _they can he taught
nevitwccupatlons which their disable-
ment does not prevent. them from fol-
lowing. And that is not all. for em-
ployinerrrt ls practically assured to
them hy the Provincial Commissions
(under tide Federal Military Hospitals
Commission) which have charged
themselves with the duty of finding
work and wages for the retumlng vet-
