Some of us have worked on the CADRE but that is the same as being inexperienced. One must realize that novices in any field make mistakes. We are making mistakes; in fact, we are making many mistakes.ln this respect the SUN is the same as the CADRE. Where, then, lies the dif- ference? The SUN is trying to learn from its mistakes; we are trying to improve with every issue. The CADRE never really improved. it was the same allyear long. It made few attempts at self-improve- ment. This doesn't mean the SUN will be a better paper than the CADRE, but at least we will have tried to make it better. No one should ask for more. Dear Sun Staff The SUN would like to ex- press their apologies to Cheryl Cannon concerning the article on the S.U.C. meeting. Once again we experienced lay- out problems. We hacked up what was a very good article. it will not happen again, Cheryl. Please forgive us. The Staff ofvthe SUN. The article in the second edition concerning the presidential candidates had no place in a responsible newspaper. It was strictly speculative and sensationa- list, bearing no relationship to the reality of the situ- ation. The Selection Committee realized the gravity of their job and laboured over it. After many hours of preparation and both personal and communal deliberation, they made what in conscience they felt to be the best decis?on for our university. Your article not only belittled the intelligence of the people who made the decision by suggesting that the criterion was as uneducated as you portrayed, but it also unjustly attacked the caliber of the applicants all of whom were eminently qualified. not change the image or the quality of the newspaper, only responsible student journalists can do that. Patricia O'Brien Dear Editor: . , This is with reference to your story on the candidates for President published in the September l5 issue of your newspaper. I think it should be emphasized that ALL the can-' didates who were interviewed on campus were eminently qualified for the job. We should consider ourselves fortunate that these people showed interest in the positiOn. I do not know what the source of your story is. I hope it is not the Search Committee, for I find the story to be too distasteful to have originated from a com- mittee which was entrusted with such a Serious task. ~ Yours sincerely, Satadal Dasgupta Department of Sociology and Anthropology. o'd name in the salutation because the paper hasn't changed-- you're just becoming pornographic in less obvious ways. (Frankly, I preferred the Walt Disney cartoon parody, as it was healthier than the piece i will refer to below.) The_ name Cadre was, in any event, a good one to live up to, but editors Willis and MacRae were the last to make any attempt at that. ‘ A Sgn_is suppose to shed light. Your article on the Presidential Search COmmittee's deliberations, "All the candidates were Good but...”, in the Sept- ember l5 issue, did the reverse-- it pulled down the blinds on “truth” regarding the search and it cast dark shadows on the' reputations of several fine men-- not to speak of the Search Committee, which would have to have been pretty dumb to act on the perceptions you ascribe to it. Most of this article is bad rumour. It is either cont'd on p. 5
