$p-Editorial My 2¢ on the 2G games By Mare MacDonald Well the Olympic games are damn near over and Canada hasn’t done shit. Now, I know we have 6 or 7 medals and the athletes are trying real hard blah, blah, blah. I’m not blaming the ath- letes. They train their asses off and live on Kraft Dinner. I blame a lack of support from government, media, sponsors and us, the Canadian public. Many other countries with less people, less wealth, and less resources are kicking our ass in the medal count and it’s pissing me off. The worst part is that the government is not capitalizing on the opportunity to give more aid to sports. This is usually a touchy subject and people often complain that the money could be spent on better things than sports. Right now, however, many Canadians who haven’t watched a sporting event in four years are glued to their TV sets. When these people see us getting our butt kicked by Romania, it will appeal to their sense of nationalism and theyll be more than happy if the PM announces a couple extra mil- lion going to Canadian amateur sports. The craziest shit is that the only team really doing well is the men’s basketball team, which has- n’t even made it to the last few games and hasn’t won a medal since 1936. What, is it that we can only have one or the other: good basketball but not the rest of the sports. Another thing really pissing me off is people playa hating on Donovan Bailey. He won two fuck- ing gold medals, embarrassed the Yanks, kicked the shit out of that fake ass Michael Johnson and sin- gle-handedly restored our nation’s faith in the Olympics’ most excit- ing event: the 100 metre sprint. Now everybody is saying that he’s faking, and that he sucks, and they’re asking, “What has he done for us lately?” They act like he didn’t want another gold metal. It’s not surprising though. Whether in wartime, politics, or most other realms, Canada never remembers its heroes. It could be worse, though. At least we don’t have to watch the Olympic Games a day late because of some capitalist bullshit that allows one network to own exclu- sive rights to the games and not show them until a the next day in prime time, like they do south of the border.
