THE BRITISH AMERICAN 159 [—- ‘ idate at Sidne was proposed by a Reve- ggsentlbman. Vac were aware that clerical mluence was at work on both sides, and that the op site candidate expected a large mea- wreo that kind of. support, but we shall con- tinu. to protest against such exhibitions when- ever they occur; as we are satisfied that nei- ‘her morals or politics are much improved by clerical interference on such occasions. From the state of the Poll at the last accounts from Arichat, we should think Mr. Smith’s election was scoure; the freeholders on the North Shore, are expected to go rather unanimously for Mr. Young—but the number of votes in the whole Island oes not, we believe, exceed seven or eight hundred, and 271 is a large majority to diminish. Nev CH OLERA. A letter received bya gentleman in Salem, presents the following distressing picture of New Orleans: New Orleans, .N'ovember 2. There are now no less than three epidemics ragingiu this cit , viz. Cold Plague, Yellow Fever, and the C olera. There are new cases almost every moment, and from ahundred and seventy five to two hundred deaths every day. Business is nearly at a stand. A very large uumberof Irish draymen have fallen victims, and a large number of the slavcholders will not allow their slaves to work, consequently there are but very few drays running, and the streets appear almost deserted, except by hearses and mourners. It may in truth be said that man gueth to his long home, and mourners go abont the streets. If we go into the streets, we see scarcely any thing else, but tar barrels burn- ing at the corners, and funeral passing to and from the burying grounds. A short time since there was an excitement about the election, but now we hear of nothing but sickness and death. The city at this time does not con. tain more than forty thousand persons. The old inhabitants say that the city has not been so dirty for thirty years before- An endorsement on a paper, dated Friday eve- mug. Nov. 2d, states that the Cholera had dimi- nished. and that the number of cases that day would not exceed 200. It is added that the hu- rials during that week would amount to about 1200, three quarters of Cholera, and the ba- ance of Yelloerver.
