a‘“ AG"; BY Mickey Place ' We hope you had a happy holiday and we welcane you back "to the campus and will" try to cheer you with the ex- pectation that Panther athletic fortunes will be on the upgrade this semester. In our last column, written prior to the final weekend upon rwhich games were played, ‘ ' we implored our teams to better their recent 0-5 weekend. The fact that they did was of little comfort and no credit to than! The schedual called for four games only.. .all of which we lest! Watch\ out for #22. In spite of these losses We are most Op- 7 timistic after this most recent weekend Is play. Our hodkey Panthers took a pair from the St. s Thomas Tommies to start "1982 off on a happy trail. The Tommies looked like the better team Z, for the first 15 seconds ‘ .‘ gas they took the“ lead. 2 - ‘i . Our goals came ‘ from Carl Trainor(2) , ‘ Garth Arsenault, Trevor Crawford, Peter MacDon- ald, Callie MacPhail, ' Thane Campbell and Scott Neil. we noted that this was Scott's first goal since caning here from Scotland and that he, quite promptly, collected r the puck. We assume that he'll send it back to Edinburgh where it will , do his former team for a season. (Joke). Next day things were not so easy and the stubborn Tommies played with great energy and led 4-2 going into the third period. We thought our boys were frustrated by the persis— tent backchecking of the boys from , Fredriction and it wasn't untill Brian O'Stroski got some special coaching from Dr. Ron Collins that they solved their opponent's defence and went on to win in overtime, 5—4. Our .,regulati0n,_tifie goals came from Doug Currie, Peter MacDonald, Gary Trainor, Scott Neil (we kept the puck) while dependable Trevor Crawford batted in the overtime winner. This boosts our record to 8—4 and we'trail "league—‘leading U.N.B. by 5 points but we’ have three games in hand. The Panthers will now be away ' for their next six games, singles with Mount A. , Monoton, Dalhousie and St. Mary's and a pair at Memorial. Next home games will be on the~30th and 3lst against Dal. and * munt pl; ~ ’ In'basketball the news is GOOD. :Affable Billy Rec-31170715 is back: Last year's'popular M.V.P.' and Athlete of the Year Rand C‘omfi has returned and played I well over the weekend. Participating in the Nbunt A. Invitational the Panthers lost in the first roundvto eventual winners the Halifax AMC Eagles, Canadian Senior Men's Champs, featuring form- er, college grets, dropping another heartbreaking one point loss 94-93. Why don't we win some of those close ones? A. rimmed shot with three seconds to 90 didn't drop the right way. Chris Sumner was high with 34. In the consolation rOund we walloped Nbunt A. 108-- 59 with Tejan Allayne leading the way with 20. This will be a BIG weekend _ in the UPEI gym as th: powerful St. F.X. team will be in on Friday night while Dalhousie, who beat us by one point in Halifax, will be with us. on Saturday. The strenghtened Panthers, 0-3 in league play going into these games still have a good chance of making the playoffs and, having such a young team, are much more liable to improve as the season prOgresses than thier more mature rivals. The lady Panthers looked very impressive as they . " The UPEI SUN, Januajy 14, 193mm "9 up 7 . x I JOCK TALK won the championship in the second annual UPEI Women's Basketball Tournament. In the open— ing game they massacred , ’Mount St. Vincent 81- 38 with Cathy Chandler and Sue Betts leading the scorers ‘with 17 each. In the finals they were matched with Acadia, who had beaten the Mount A. team 69-50..C11r girls quickly assumed a big lead of 14—3 and led at halftime 25—15. In the second half the Panther— _ettes seemed quite willing to maintain their margin and closed out with a 54-44 win with Sue Betts having the high of 16 for us. Coach George Morrison made good use of his early lead by rotating his bench a great deal throughout. The team plays two games . here this weekend, each prior to the men's ganes, Saint F.X. on Saturday at 1:00 and Dalhousie at the same time on Sunday. If you want to see these games, get there early.
