To the Editor: We were pleased to see that the Gem covered our Faculty Seminar to report on our sexual harassment re- search. However, we’d like to clarify a couple of points which might be confusing to readers. 1. We reported data on student experiences only. ee An unclear state- ment in the article could lead readers to think that fac- ulty members in some de- partments or schools may experience more harassment than others or that faculty members in some _ schools or departments harass their students more than others. These conclusions are un- founded for two _ reasons, First, we have not analyzed the data on faculty or staff experiences of harassment from faculty, not which fac- ulty members (or their de- partments) they have these experiences from. What we did find was that male stu- dents who were Arts ma- jors and female students with Business majors tended to have relatively high levels of of experience, while male Business majors had rela- tively low levels of experi- ence. Our general findings were, as stated in the article, that most students at UPEI have had some experience of sexual harassment — most of- ten from other students or in the classroom — and that men are as likely to experience it as women. Beth Percival & Don Mazer TTT AO Dear Editor: Today, March 5 1988, the Kelly Computer Lab was to be opened at 1:00 pm and as before it took a call to se- curity to get the room un- locked. the difficulty unlocking? I What is with the thought the Computer Cen- ter had this problem all worked out. Obviously not!!! Just like the army: Hurry up and wait!!! Locked Out ec RA PRIOR SS NA Dear Editor Well folks here we -go again!! The overnight park- ing lot has not been cleaned of snow as of Sat. March 5, “many days” after the last snow storm. Why won’t they plow this lot??? Is it a plot by the ad- ministration??? Are there nasty things in the lot that the snow plow operators are worried about??? Why won’t they plow this lot??? : Anyone have a shovel??? Dear Editor: This is directed to the staff at the Gem. I under- stand that the writing staff of the Gem are, among other things, supposed to investi- gate items of concern to the students at UPEI. It seems that ,you the Writing Staff, have not fol- lowed up on the open letters to the administration regard- ing: 1. The lack of proper snow removal from the overnight parking areas. 2. The poor snow re- moval on the campus itself, i.e. the ramp leading to Memorial, walk up it without falling, let alone use a wheelchair. 3. Why has the Gem not contacted the administration or the council of the disabled about the conditions on cam- pus and reported back to the students. one can barely In short, why not and when will, the “journalists” at the Gem take the initia- tive and follow up on the lack of response from the admin- istration. Please give the reasons for this apparent lack of ac- tion. Waiting EDITOR REPLIES: You have a good point but first off, the staff are not journal- ists. We aren’t paid for what we do nor have we any formal training. We are seld-taught students who volunteer their time and try, with the lim- ited time and resources we have, to provide UPEI with a paper worth reading. We try to cover the events on this campus, but very few students seems to have the curiosity and drive it takes to write news. The Gem has three staff members who write news on a regular basis, and if other duties take them away from that volunteer ac- tivity, what can I do? If the UPEI Student Union hired a full time Gem newswriter, then you could bet all the news would get written. Second, The Gem is not an ombudsman. It is not our role to solve problems, but merely to report them. We try to generate discussion and through that discussion maybe some solutioris can be arrived at. If the administra- tion has not responded to the letters about snow removal we printed, perhaps it is time to write a letter to President Eliot. His job is to solve problems. I agree that the Gem should have in- terviewed someone in main- tenance about snow removal. We didn’t. Our fault. We will try to increase the news content of the paper.
