On Being Chinese in Rushton’s World: Excerpts Dear Diary, ...Life is great at the Univer- sity of Rushton Ontario. Rush- ton’s admission policy gives pref- erence to racially pure Orientals. We do not sacrifice academic ex- cellence to admissibility. Let’s face it: some races are just not made for higher education. ..A girl asked me out to- day. I said no because I have to study for the MCAT; it’s only 14 months away. My grandfather says that I shouldn’t worry about girls now because when I get into medical school ”chicks will come flocking to me.” I mumble to my- self: ”Chicks will come flocking to me, chicks will come flocking to me...” ...tried out for every var- sity sport, but didn’t make any. Joined the chess club and was elected president. ...1 am beginning to discover the drawbacks of going to school at Rushton. First of all, we don’t have very many white or black students to bell up our marks. Secondly, there are more and more minorities at the university; for example, half my friggin’ eco- nomics class must be Korean or Japanese. From A Diary ...Went out with some white guys last Friday night. I had one light beer. Luckily my par- ents didn’t find out about my lack of restraint, but I grounded my- self and did all the supplementsry problem sets for calculus. ...-Today, I discovered that I have small genitalia. I scratched my braod forehead, put on some clothes and prepared three physics labs. ”Chicks will come flocking to me...” ...“I’ve created a program on my computer which can calculate my marks to date, correlate them with previous years’ marks and project my final marks for the year. ...Crimes rates are way up in our neighbourhood since the whites started moving in. Why can’t they be more law-abiding Orientals? We should bring back the dealth penalty. ...1 woke up late this Sunday morning and studied for a few hours before breakfast. Took a break from studying to read some chemistry. ...Lhought about sex as I flipped through my biology text- book. Took a cold shower and did physics. ”Chicks will come flock- ing to me...” ..-“I found out that my sister, the black sheep of the family, is going out with a white guy. I’m worried about the genetic impli- cations for the children. Can you get AIDS from your brother-in- law? ...Got 98 percent on a Physics test last week. Since then, I’ve had four nightmares about the other two percent. ..Same girl asked me out again. I said no because we might be having a surprise Cal- culus quiz next month. ..Got an A plus on my biol- ogy project. I demonstrated that two white rats could run through mazes faster than two black rats. My results were published and I won a scholarship from the Pio- neer Foundation. | ...Haven’t thought about sex for five weeks now. Five weeks ahead in Physics. Going through chemistry notes for the third time. Only 108 days left until final exams. “Chicks will come flocking to me...” Racism in How a US Right Pai By Tu Thanh Ha and Cathy Majtenyi Canadian University Press LONDON, Ont. —- The stu- dents’ faces were painted half in white and half in black and, | as they circled outside the au- ditorium, shouting and waving placards, police officers swarmed around all over the area. On the evening of Feb. 8, there were 200 demonstrators, 15 police officers, 100 journalists and an audience of 2,000 present at this auditorium at the campus of the University of Western On- tario. The event: a public debate between David Suzuki, renowned geneticist and science educa- tor, and J. Philippe Rushton, the Western psychology professor who, in a span of two weeks, had | become Canada’s most controver-_ sial academic. While achieving his notoriety, Rushton has been placated by many of his fellow university pro- fessors for his views linking race to intelligence and his beliefs that blacks have smaller brains, are more promiscuous and show less criminal restraint than Orientals and whites. Rarely mentioned, however, is that for at least four years, some of Rushton’s work has been paid by a right-wing American foun- dation which finances studies on “racial betterment.” Presenting a 13-page paper ti- tled “Evolutionary Biology and Heritable Traits,” Rushton told 100 delegates at a session of the conference that “Mongoloids,” having evolved later than “Cau- casoids” and “Negroids,” have larger brain and scored higher in intelligence tests. Among traits used by Rush- . ton to show that Orientals are more sexually restrained are the frequency of marital and pre- marital intercourse, the size of
