THE MARKET PRICES.--The tol-
lowing prices were secured on the
Charlottetown market square yester-
day and have prevailed since last*
Tuesday:-White outs, 38 to 400; black
oats, 40 to 420; potatoes, 25 to 30c;
beef (quarter), per lb, 10 to 16c.
The prices quoted by the wholesalers
are:-Potatoes, 25 to 280; hay, 70
to 750; white oats, 38 to 400; black
oats, 40 to 42c; straw, $5.50 to
$6.50.

Buyer, Charlottetown, received yes-
terdny from Halifax one gold and two
silver medals which he won at the
recent exhibition there. The gold mad-
nl was awarded for the best collec-
tion of photographs; one silver med-
al for the best colored photograph

photographs. 'The medals are all very
hzlnilsonie and were all first prizes.
Mr. Bayer is to be heartily congru-
tulnteri on the success he has achiev-
ed in his chosen profession.
ANCIENT HISTORY.-In "The
Military Annals of Lancaster, Mass,"
by the late Henry A. Nourse, ex-
tracts are given from a. journal kept
by Captain Abijah Willard, from
April 9,1755, to January 6, 1756,
during his service with the Massachu-
setts troops who assisted in the ex-
plusion of the Acadians, which indi-
cate two things concerning the abori-
gines of Prince Edward Island : they
were evidently of a warlike splrit,and
in one instance at least had a strong
partinlity for rum.. At the capture
of Fort Beau Selour, Captain Wil-
lord relates how the Massachusetts
troops repelled an attack of the
French and Indians, and says : “We
