When we recall how severe and long- continued was the fighting in Cape Colony and Natal before the Boer forces were driven out of territories indisputably British we need not wonder that resist- ance is still cropping up in the newly conquered State north of the Orange River. When Lord Roberts first reached Bloemfontein the enemy was still in possession of the railway south of that co B ra mmunication was made secure between loemfontein and the sea. When driven away from this portion of the line of ilway the enemy still remained active in the southeast portions of the state, and all will remember the warfare waged for weeks in the regions about Thabanchu, Ladybrand and Wepener until the oppo- sition in that quarter was quelled. When Lord Roberts made his swift march northward to Johannesburg and Pretoria he wok with him the greater part of the cavalry and mounted infantry but left behind several considerable infantry forces to guard the railway communications in his rear and todeal with the Boer forces yet remaining in what had been the Free State. Be it observed that this railway runs through the length of the State, a distance of 300 miles. It is not altogether surprising that in the northern section of this long stretch of railway the enemy were able by a swift raid to cut Lord Roberts’ com- munications, severing the telegraph wiresancl tearing up many miles of track. _-is nearly as can be learned the Boer forces in the Orange River State engaged in the recent raid number altogether some tive thousand men, under command of Dewit and Ollivier. At the same time there were at least 30,000 British troops, a large part of them within what might he' called, easy striking distance of the raiders. Gen. Colville with the Ninth Division was at Heilbrcn; Lord Methuen with the :First Division was at Lindley; Gen. Chermsicle with the Third at Kroonstadt on the railway; Generals. Rundle and Brabant with the Eighth and Colonial Divisions at Ficksburg; Gen Cle-` ments with the Twelfth Brigade at Senek- of the Sixth and other troops at Bloem fontein. It was one of the most brilliant move- maiits of the Boer campaign to he communicated with his subordinates, caving six generals fora week without- forthe great cities during the heated term husiissiimed vast proportions. Last year city and some weeks elapsed before the C€l'1t8~ Whebher the h\1R¢lWiDdl¢ Willrf' al and Gen. Kelly-Kenny with a Brigade t ~ f i _ f ' S ' "r.; una- 1 . I-I *Ui* E _ M J As is well-known the supplying of ice the great Ice companies were consolidated into a huge trust, commonly spoken of as the Tainmanylce Trust from the pol iticnl complexion of its leading promoters. This trust controls the supply of ice for the great city of New York and a recent in- vestigation shows, on his own admission that Mayor Van Wyck last year bought $250.0(l) worth of the Ice Trust stock on credit kindly furnished him by the Presi- dent of the Trust. On this stock he ls in receipt of dividends of 10 per cent, org, $25,000 a. year. The Trust had put up the price of ice to 60 cents per 100 lbs. but since the exposure has reduced lt, to 40 sult in the Mayor being ousted from his official position remains to be seen., As in Dante’s Inferno to the lowest depths there was a still Iower,so there are abysses of crime to which men may sink which seem beyond the bounds of credibi- lity. Such an appalling crime was that committed three years ago in San Fran- cisco, and to which Rev. Mr. Gibson, pastor of a. church, has now, on his death- bed, confessed himself guilty, as will be found detailed in another column. Two young ladies, members of the church choir, were found murdered in the tower of the church. The pastor was at the time under some suspicion but managed to divert it to Theodore Durrant, who part- ly on the ministers testimony was con- victed, senteuced to death and executed, while asserting his innocence ! Gibson now confesses that he did the double murder, sent an innocent man to his death and thereafter continued his pastoral Work ! Language fails to portray the more than fiendish atrocity of such a crime. Vi/'hen last winter Governor Mclnixis dis- missed the Semlin ministry in British Columaia the matter was brought up in the Commons by Col. Prior and Sir \Vil- fred Laurier replying spoke in part as follows: We may have our views, I say, as to the advisability of the conduct of the Lieutenant-Governor and as' to the me- thod in which he has proceeded, but all this is in the hands of the people of the Province. If they approve of the action of the Lieutenant~Governor, in my judg- ment, that is an end of the question. If they disapprove of it by returning to the House of Assembly a. majority opposed to the present Government, it is obvious hat the Lieutenant-Governor will be ound to have taken a. very serious step. But until the people have pronoifhced on the matter, I submit very respectfully to the judgment of the House that it is not for this Parliament; and still less for this Government, to offer any opinion as to what has taken place in British Col- umbia. The people of British Columbia have now spoken and returned a majority op- 'ordcrs from their chief. It fell to the lot.
