Moby Dick Again
A collector of rare books paid
$1075 the other day in New York
for a copy of an old book entitled
"The Nan-itlvo of thc Shipwreck
of the Whale-ship Essex, of Nan-
tucket"; :md the interesting thing
about it is thc fact that this book
once was owned by Herman Mel-
ville and seems to have contained
tho original thread upon which
Melvillc‘s great novci, "Moby Dick,"
was hung.
This book told how the ship Es-
sex, about n century ago, was ram-
med nnd sunk by a huge sperm
whale off the coast of chile, and
how the crew made its way to
shore, 1000 miles away, in small
boats.

It is inocfnceivable that the figures
furnished to the Mayor by the City
Clerk as to outstanding labilities
as at the 18th Feb_ 1932 under the
accounts mentioned could have in-
creased to the extent shown in
comparison with the figures shown
iz; the advance statement of the
City Accounts for 1931.
This latter statement is Sfzlled by
the City Clerk who states "I have
at the request of the chair-msn of
the Finance Oommlttee, (Mr. E. A.
Foster), added to the itemized re-
ceipts, the item “Taxes Receivable"
and to the itemized expenditure
"Accounts Payable". It was felt this
method would ‘give the taxP1iY€1'S ll
clearer understanding of the C1ty‘s
yearly budget.
It must be pointed out that the
advance statement of the City Ac-
counts for 1931 is signed by the
auditors as audited and found oor-
rect.
Some explanation appears to be
necessary as to the large increase
in the figures furnished in the ad-
vance statement a! at the (list Dec
1931 and those fumished to the
Mayor as at the 16th Feb. 1932 just
one and a half months later.

Sir,-The possession these days of
flying machines with the ability to
soar in mid-heaven leads daringly
imaginative minds to contemplate
the seeming impossible: to go on,
conquering other worlds besides our
own.
Because of the thinness of rarlfled
air which is found those miles above
us, the conclusion is drawn that
the infinitude beyond must be like
that. In fact famous Professor Ed-
dington has described the molecules
of matter filling outer space to be
an appreciable distance each from
the other. We have watched the
Aurora Borealis, with its delicately
hued curtains of the night waving
and shimmering in the heavens
above, just like diaphanous gar-
ments hung out to dry. I have con-
ceived the Aurora to be the nice
adjustment of our sir volume. So
much pressure; no more; no less.
Very much after the hydraulic pro»~
perties of water, constant every-
where.
Now, what do we know about the
air we breathe? Very little. I sup-
pose that the chief observation is
concerning weather. A little change
in the constituent gases and flame
would result in universal oonflsgra-
tion. That is air.
Some ot us remember that during
the ’D0's much interest was aroused
by the discovery and manipulation
of liquid air. (Not hot air. by the
way). We were treated to pictures
in the various illustrations of such
novel lllhts as n kettle filled with
this liquid, boiling rapidly on ri
block of ice. Showing that solid
ice was hot, when compared with
the temperatures required to ilquify
air. Iron plates became brittle and
fell fn pieces when immersed in
it.
Since one theory may be as good
as mother, I have oonceived an idea
