THE CADRE, OCTOBER 22, 1974, PAGE 4‘ Dear Students,> During the past few weeks, I heard a lot of complaints about the Sunday night movie. As the chairman of the Movie Club, I would like to give you some explanations. First of all, I have to let you know that our club is facing two major problems, internal and external problems. When I talk about the in— ternal problem, it does not mean that we have a problem within our club, but within our university. Many of us might notice that some of our fellow students do not bother to behave themselves and have never considered others. During the movie, instead of enjoying, they started making noises. From now on, I think I have to ask those who make noises to leave the theatre at once. If the same person gets caught twice, we have to ask him to stay away from our movie for the rest of the year. I hate to do that, but I have to. Some people also criticized that our movies are moresthan two years old, because we have promised to bring movies in which are two years old or less. I have to say that some of our movies are two years old or less, for example, "The Nelson Affair" which was made in 1973. Besides "The Nelson Affair" there are more than three movies which are two years old or less. We do want to bring in the latest shows we can get, however we are facing an external problem. During the Orientation Week, we tried to show "Serpico" (This movie was shown in the Prince Edward Cinema after our Orientation Week), but the film company, Paramount Film Service Ltd. turned our order down. Their reason is, it had nct yet been shown in the Prince Edward Cinema. Miss Jean White, the 16mm Booker of that company said they have to give the film first to the Famous Players Theatres on the Island before they can rent it to us. I did protest against this, but they said they could do noth— ing about it, because Prince Edward Cinema is a bigger But due to space, could you please limit the length. 7 b _# customer than U.P.E.I. Movie Club. For the same reason, many of our orders were turn— ed down. Why’is the Cinema a bigger customer to Paramount? The answer is, they make more money and could pay a higher rental price. We are a non- profit making club, there is no way we could pay them high- er prices. This year, the movies cost us close to 4,000 dollars, and the qual— ity did improve. In Order to bring in better movies, we need the support from Student Union and all the fellow students. If you have any suggestions or complaints, please write to us, and we are trying our best for improvement. Our address is: . U.P.E.I. Movie Club, c/o Student Union, U.P.E.I. Yours truly, Christopher Lee 'Chairman Movie Club Dear Sir: May I ask for space in your letters column to issue the following challenge to you and other students? . At the open forum arranged two weeks ago for the Committee on Objectives, there was much talk of students being unduly dominated by professors, and of the student input to this committee being merely "token". All right. Here is a chance to organize some kind of student session about university life — where the professors, if you want them, can be merely token. On Thursday night, as you know, Dr. Arthur Porter (who did a 2—year study of the University of Western Ontario) is speaking on campus. On Fri- day, he is available all day to meet with smaller grOups,' in any kind of forum we care to televise it. , ” The time between now and Friday is short, but for the past week I have been talking to many of you in person. Can you do it? Of are you as inr potent as your critics would have us believe? Yours sincerely, Terry Pratt Dear Dave, What took place in Memorial .Hall during the 8th and final game of the Canadian - Russian series was misfortunate. How? ever, such remarks as—"Kill 'em!" , "I want to see two ,Russians carried off the ice this period" and "Yeah...not killed, just maimed" were not directed to Team Canada but to the individual supporting the theory that "Team Canada are greasers". However, what start- ed out as a joke, as you later ‘pointed out, turned into a personal affair for which I apologize. Nevertheless, I cannot go along with your particular ideology. Whether or not the Canadians were high-sticking Russians or that Russians were kicking Canadians re- mains irrelevant. What is more important and closer to the 'problem was the notorious in— ability of those in charge (the referees) of handling the action on the ice. So long as this calibre of reffing remains we can no doubt expect more incidents like those ex— hibited during the past Canada— Russia matches. Furthermore, I was quite sat- isfied with Ley's performance during the 6th game when.§he" proceeded to "pummel" the Russ- STRFF ian player at the end of the game. But not for reasons that you may have suggested. By dropping the sticks and ‘ having it out "Canadian stylem one avoids a more serious in—; jury that could occur during a stick swinging duel. Again the point is not whether I’ support fighting but that of all the outlets open for re- taliatiOn, ie, kicking or stick swinging, the first re— mains the least dangerous. The sooner the Russians real~§ ize this and proceed to drop I their sticks rather than fence with a Canadian opponent less5 likely will you have to com— plain about Canadian grease. To direct comments towards "Team Canada", who are~out1 E there perfOrming at”théir>¥ ’ best for 20 million peopIE”> ‘ back home, that they are bums: in International Hockey.is" very sad and one—sided. If you still recall the incident- that day maybe then you'll realize that it takes two to start stick swinging. What eventually took place later "labelled me as a Canadian Greaser" but none of this - 1 1 .would have taken place if it wasn't for the fact that your? choice of words were slight~ 1y out of hand. It wasn't me that told’you to Vf—-k off" 3 .nor did I direct any charactem insults”in-your“diréctioni#A (Think about that‘thé asks a: - time-you so appropriatelyfim; label Team Canada as "cruel, brutal, anti-social animals!"
