Anything can be made on short notice, no matter how odd or ar- tis’ic. ‘“‘A man comes in and says, ‘I am go- ing to give a little dinner party, and I want some little thing that will make a hit,’ Lask him a few questions as to the event to be celebrated or tha guest to be honored, and then show him the stock. apot carried in Suppose it ts a card party. me can be supplied with moulds representing all the cards in the deck, but the aces, jacks, queens and kings shows up the best “For a chess party a set of moulds sufticient to set a board can be supplied. Each square is detached and setona little plate of the exact size, and the host distributes kings, queens, castles, bis- hops, knights or pawns to his guests,” One of the most elaborate children's parties ever given in New York was that of Commodore Gerry to his young rela- tives. When the ice cream was set be- fore the ¢ lighted children thev greeted with peais ot merriment the old, tamiliar figures of Mother Hubbard, Jack-the- | Giant Killer, Hop-o'-My-Thumb, Giant | Blunderbore, Goody Two Shoes, Cinder- | ella, Aladdin, Sindbad and all the rest. | There were 50 designs made expressly | for the occasion. Bread and Butier Plates. “Are bread and butter plates in use yet, and are the littie spreaders the pro- | per thing to use with them?” is a query which reaches this department. The reply to the first question is made that they indubitably are, although it will not be difficult to find some authorities announcing that they are not. These little plates have been found to be a great convenience, and experience shows that when such is the case enough sensible persons are always found who will continue the use of a convenience to keepitin fashion. The bone plates which preceded them were not nice in suggestion and were speedily abondon- ed. A place for a piece of bread and a separate smal] knife with which to put a piece of butter on it is, in lieu of com- plicating the service of a meal,a distinct simplifier; it is more useful in the one- snaid establishment, even, than in the «'aborate ones, for it assists inthe matter oOfserving. Itis a mistake to have these plates too large; but it is not a mistake to have them. Glass ones are pretty aud the silver “spreader,"’ as they are vulgarly called, for the nice person does not spread bread, should be equally un- obtrusive.-—New York Times. Danced With the Queen. The story often told that the late Hon. Richard Vaux had danced with Queen Victoria, has been denied quite fre- quently since his death, but, as a mat- ter of tact, he did dance with the Queen. He was not her partner, it is true, but danced in what was known as the Queen's cotillon, at the ball given in her honor in 1837, when he was secretary of the United States legation Mr. Vaux was selected by the Queen herself, as one of the seven persons to join with her in the dance,a very great honor. In the course of the evolutions in the cotil- lon he daneed with the Queen. SATURDAY, MAY 4, 20 YEARS OF SUFFERING. 20 Failures to Cure the damned with blind and itching piles. Had I known of any cure I would not have hesitated to bave given hundreds of dollars to obtain it. I followed the in- structions of an eminent physician in us- ing syringe treatments. I used Fowler's Pile Cure and 20 others of different kinds. From some a little relief was gained, bat nothing approached a cure. I was about resigned tothe fate of having to pass through an almost uninterrupted course of suffering so long as I lived, when Chase’s Ointment was brougnt to my not- ice. The statements in regard to it were so strong and bore with them a sense of conviction sufficient to overcome my skepticism in regard to its being no_ bet- ter than the rest. I used it, with the re- sult of receiving immediate relief and per- manent cure. For weeks and weeks | was fearfully afraid of a return to misery, but it did not occur. I started using Chase’s Ointment, hoping for relief and realized a cure that is permanent. I do not believe there ever was a worse case of blind end itching pilesthan mine, which leads me to think there is not a case to be recorded that Chase’s Ointment will not cure. Yours truly, Geo. W.
