With the progress of thc inquest into
the cause of the death of llarrett lien
derson, startling fact after fact is being
revealed and if the evidence produced at
this eoroner`s hearing is any criterion,
the trial of Josiah Gilbert, for the mur-
der with which he is charged, will he the
most intensely interesting and sensa-
tional in the history of the city aiirl dis-
trict.
THE GUN
SHOT WOUNDS
Dr. G. A. Charlton, stated that [thc
body had a slight bruise in the inner' sur'
fucc of the right, knee and ti. bruise on the
base of the right thumb ami on the wrist
of the anrne irand. The left eye was
blackened. On the left side of the face be-
ginning at the angle of the moutli and
extending outward and slightly up-
ward, in n line with the lower' lobe of
the ear, tlie1'e was a lncernted wound,
three inches in length and which had
been closed by tho medical men. On
a line with the left nostril outward,
and about one inc-li distant was an-
other ragged and somewhat triangular
wound one inch by onchnlf inch, and
also closed liy the doctors. One and a
liali' inches outward [roui the angle of the
left eye isa small puncture surrounded by
a blackened area. one quarter of an inch In
diaruetcr.
In reply to questions by Mr. Johnstone
later in the hearing, Dr. Charlton further
explained the direction of the shot, using
a pen and maklrir: it clear that the gun
which vomlted the charge must have been
nearly on a dead level with the face of the
dead man.
The lower jaw from the first molar
backward to a half an inch from the
angle of the jaw together with the teeth
is missing and fragments of both were
recovered further up near the base of the
skali. The teeth of the upperjaw over a
corrcspondinrr area are broken and for the
most part niissinu.
NAILS
FOR BULLETS
The upper wound, probing discovered,
lay directly over the obliterated antraeuni,
and using his linger as a probe and
exploring the full length of the cavity it
was discovered that a slut: lay at the
farther end. This slug consisted of the
head end of a wire nail with about a
quarter of an inch ofthe shrink of the nail
attached to the head. Thn sluglny hack
.igainst thc base of the skull, and opposite
the fracture noted above.
Further backwards and ontwards
another slu-1 was discovered similar' to the
iirst one found, and thc only conclusion
to be reached was that the gun had been
loaded with these iirinsiles of destruction.
Only two of these nail slugs were dis-
covered liowever, and these were placed
in evidence as exhibits.
DIRECT CAUSE OI" DEATII
Replying to Mr. Johnstone,Dr. Charlton
said the direct cause of death was the
iri_jui'y to the brain. Sufilcient blood
vessels and arteries were severed by the
shot- to cause the loss of almost all tlfc
blood in the liody by liemorrages wltliin
a couple of hours. One of the nerves was
severed which has todo with the supply-
ing of the heart together these formed
srrlliclent injury to cause death.
Although lie only found two slugs Dr.
Charlton said he should think it would
take more than two slugs such as he
found to cause the wound. The lacerat-
ion was a gaplnrr one, and when opened
as it. would be by the shot, one could lay
a list in the envity.
John Hr Boyle was the second witness
called. Ilia evidence was that oi’ indenll-
fying the body viewed by the_jury as that
of the late Barrett llcridr-rson.
lie had seen lzotli parties since the deal,
Henderson frequently and Gilbert. only
once. He had had conversations with
Henderson and learned that Gilbert
wantedato get out of the contract into
which he had entered. I-is had not been
told so by Mr. Gilbert, but Mr Henderson
had imparted theiniormation.
lie said he did not know from anything
Josiah Gilbert had oald to him that he

On many occasions however, Henderson
had spoken iahout the deal. On the

\Vitness was at the Hospital before
Henderson died. Before the operation
was performed, witness said: “Hender-
sou, Boyle is here." I-icnring this the
unfortunate man reached out his hand,
grasped that of witness,squeezed it and
said “Good bye, Boyle." This was follow-
liv something inartlculate and, “I ani out
here among strangers."
Dr. Meek said: Barrett Henderson wn\
taken to the hospital and as I was tin-
monthly attendent the case was harirlori
over to me.
"The wound was bleeding profusely.
externally and internally. The internal
bleeding caused _difficulty in lireaihinp
and articulation. I-lenderson was in n
sinking condition and had suiferrnl n
violent shock. Immediate steps to stop
the bleeding were necessary and lie was
advised to take an nnaesthetic to which
he consented.
