entation from east to west. It is claimed
that in three years since the last census
was taken a quarter of a‘ million people
have been added to the population of the
Territories, and if this is true they would
now be entitled to twenty members in-
sieai often. They may not, in view of
these facts be content to walt till the
next census for a further lncrese in their
representation. The Toronto \\'orld
suggests that it would he but lair to enu-
Ineratc the people of the rapidly growing
Territories every five years, and to allot
them alter each such enumeration the
full quota of members to which they
would be found entitled. This sounds
fair enough, but it might involve a
change in the British North Amnrica
Act. Perhaps our western friends when
asking for this might be willing to con-
sent that the Maritime Provinces shall re-
tain undlminishcd the representation
with which we entered the union, and
to restoring it where already reduced
below the original number.
THE FARMERS AND THE
DOMINION PACKING COMPANY.
Wo recently published the letter of J.
W. Cillboclr of Augustine Cove proposing
aplan for a better understanding between
the farmers and stock producers of the
Island on the one part and the
Dominion Packing Company on the
other part. We are gina also
to tlnd that these proposals in outline
have met with the approval of Mr. Wiley,
the manager of thePacklniz Company and
also of a number ofthe Farmers' Institutes
which have considered the matter, and
that seyeral of the Institutes have appoint-
ed delegates to meet in Charlottetown'
confer with the Company and make a
definite arrangement for their future
working.
What appears now to be necessary is
for the other Farmers' Institutes about
the Island also to appoint delegates to
the proposed conferenae,appolnt a time
and place of meeting and press the
matter to a conclusion. We think thc
movement of decided importance and in
the best interest ofthe farmers and the
Company alike. It is most desirable that
full and frank understanding shall be
arrived at at ns early a dale as can con-
