The seat of President was the only one which was contested of all openings on the Student Union. McGibbon fought a close campaign against a single opponent: Heather Boyce, a senior business student. Few controversial iss ues were raised during the election.‘ ' Points raised by both i would 1ike to thank Alan Hilton and Dale Gould for helping me with my campaign. Also I would like to thank all the people who supported me all year. i was also impressed with the numbers who turned out to vote. I commend my opponent. Fioinoak Ad:res Vie Must Last Friday, 34 ' 'students and 3] members of the faculty, administratiOn and staff attended a week- end seminar called involvement '77. The cost was $1,600, involved 65 people and was a weekendA at Oak Acres (down Murray River way.) . , This could be an article about what happened during 1 this weekend but that would not get the essence of the affair. But for those who don't realize what Involvement '77 was, it was a weekend where staff, adminiStration, faculty and students could sit dovm and talk. They discdssed such\ things as their roles with-i in the University; their relationship with other departments of the university; the relation- Ship (or desired . ~ relationship) the university has with the Island ‘ ‘ community._ All this was Grow done within small discussion groups. > A reporter would be making.a very feeble attempt trying to report on every- lthing discussed, for topics ranged from alcohol to the Landlord and Tenant Act and from apathy to personal philosophies. . ‘ It is not so important to know what was discussed as what became of all the discussiOn. - Everyone in the univers- ity who did not attend was deprived. Everyone else benefitted from the ‘weekend. The most important’realization ‘was that we were all real people; students realized a professor was not some- one who just stood in front of a class and prefessors realized students were more than listeners. Staff'finally ,found bodies to match ivoices they had talked to on the phone. Administ- candidates centered around student involvement, and the emphasis placed on liquior at most student affairs. However, _McGibbon was outspoken on various issues regarding the Atlantic Federation of Students as well as the Landlord and Tennant Act. The new President of the Student Union has been skeptical of the A.F.S. during his campaign. He has hinted that he would like to see UPEI boy cott the federation as have other Universities in the Maritime region. Official statements state that he will ” look into the matter closely be- fore authorizing payment of fees to the organization. McGibbon's opinions regarding the Landlord and Tennant Act are going to face a head on collision with the University admin- istration. He has stated that he feels Campus residences should remain under the auspTces of the Act. sun 5 ELECTION. This is directly opposed to President Ronald Bakers views on the matter. The President has stated he would prefer to see no residences, rather than residences controlled by the Provincial Act. McGibbon has experience on the student newspaper, radio station, and student union. McGibbon is serious a- bout the job but realizes little can be accomplished in his short term in of- fice. At a recent Seagram's Distillery presentation, Mickey Place, the Student Union Business Manager, and his wife were dis- cussing the presidential candidates. Mickey was saying how Boyce was re- ferred to as “the girl with the pretty face.“ When asked by his wife to point out McGibbon, Mickey said he was sit- ting beside so-and-so. Mrs. Place said “ Oh, you mean the boy with the pretty face.“ ration saw the opposition without the gloves. Positions became people. Has any student ever realized the problems of the staff in the Alumni Office? This weekend revealed such things. The people who were there finally found out what I problemsxother people had! in their Official ' capacity.
