O IN the First Methodist Church last, evening, previous to commencing the service, the Rev. Mr. Campbell made some very feeling remarks in reference 1 to the narrow escape of three members of the congregation who were on the ill-fated steamer Labrador, and asked the congregation to join heartily in singing “Praise God from whom all blessings How,” which they did with a good will. ~.- A VERY large congregation of men gathered at the Op_era House, yesterday. afternoon, to hear Rev. Marcell Con- ran’s address on Purity. The speaker was listened to most attentively by all and made an eloquent plea tor purity of thought, word and deed. A good congregation was present at the mis- sion service last night. The sermon was a. continuation of the series on sin. Wnen Eve sinned she naturally desired to lead some one else. Adam had choice of either Eve or God. He chose his wife, but still, in God’s pre- sence, he turned against her. Sin al- ways divides peoplc. Righteousness joins all together. Siu breeds _distrust and strife. Adam, after sinmng re- proached God as the cause of his sin. “The woman that Thou gavest to be with me gave me to eat.” So when W0 sin we think all the world is against us. We excuse ourselves by a lie. W6 must stick to God and duty in the face of all persecutions and troubles. We must strlve_ and iight against all tenden- ciesto sin. It may be hard, but 511 things are possible to God. When they seem dark and hard to- our minds God will perfect His workin us. Our sins are our own] We must not blamehnan or God. We must acknowledge our fault and God wlll pardon and bless us for it.-Services to-day, Holy Communion at 6.50 and 7.45 a. m; spiritualin- struction at 7.25; marins at 9:int61°- icessory 'service at 12 noon; Bible read- ing at 4 p. m; evensong at 5; mission service and sermon at 7.30. At _.the opening of the morning session there was a discussion upon provincial exhibitions. C. A. Everett, who was pr- sent, was plied with various quest- ions. C. _A. Archibald moved, and it was seconded and carried, that the St. John Exhibition Association be asked to limit the time of cattle exhibits to six days. W. W. Black said there should be better loading facilities at St. John. If the wharf were extended to take in two more cars it would be a good pro- vision. Jnhn F. Frost said there was no question but that the shortening of the time of exhibition would bé popular. He thought the railway could easily ar- gange a longer wharf. MONTREAL, March 2.-The 'largest audience that ever came together to see a hockey game in this city filled the large Arena rink last evening to wit- ness one of the most brilliant games seen here for a long time. The match was between the Shamrocks -and holders of the Staiiley cup. The teams were evenly matched and the game was hotly contested and most exciting throughout. As a result,if urday next, as they expect to do, they will be the champions. ` Should they be. defeated, it will be necessary to play off ` with the Viciorias. The only score _during the evening was during the first half, when :he Shanirocks, after a hard” struggle, succeeded in putting the rub- ber through. During the last half, though there _were many narrow escapes, neither team succeeded in scoring.
