GOTHAM VILLAGE of three lives with property dum- age estimated at $442,000 in the Province during the year 1947, Pro- vincial Fire Marshal Charles A. Beer stated in an interview yester- day in connection with Fire Pre- vention Week. While the main purposes of Fire Prevention Week is undoubtedly to call attention to the devastating toll oi’ life and property taken by fire each year and urge every pre- caution to be taken to reduce this loss. it is essential, the Fire Mar- shal stressed. that the public be fire conscious at all times and ex- ercise vigilance 52 weeks oi’ the year in order to save llves and property. The Fire Marshal noted a reduc- tion oi’ fires caused from sparks on roofs and felt that this was due to more and more people using iire resistant. shingles. In looking over the causes of fire o breaks in the Province, Mr. Beer iound that heating accounted for 69. sparks on rooi’ 45. defective wiring 10, and carelessness in smoking 39. There were only 49 cases where fires were put on rec- ord as "origin unknown." The largest fire for the year, 1947. was the destruction of an up- to-date canning plant with pro- perty loss in excess of $50,000.
