LONDON, March 5.-The question
of who set flreito Moscow and so
turned Napoleon's great triumph in-
to the most bitter defeat, has always'
been of international interest. Count
Tlieodolre Rastopchine, Governor
General of Moscow in 1812, was al-
most immediately credited with the
heroic recklessness of the order. But
in 1823 he published a pamphlet, en-
titled 'The Truth Concerning the
Great Fire of Moscow’, in which lic
deliberately repudiated having had
anything`to do 'With the mutter. It
therefore remained more or less of a
mystery. Now, his granddaughter,
the Comtessc Lydia Rostopchine, in
a very intimate and lniman study of
her grandfather's life, asserts thot
everything, in fact, upon which hap-
piness had been built-foundered for
,the Count. The wife, who for years
had been~the embodiment ol saintly
‘truth for him- was, he discovered,
secretly, no longer of the orthodox,
`religion, but, while outwardly pro-
fessing to believe in the same faith
Ias himself, was privately following
the tenets oi Roman Catholism, and
declaring her husband a heretic doom
,ed to eternal predition. '.!‘.ie shock
‘was sogreat, the Count never re-
covered from it. But though from
that moment he became morose, em-
bittered, and unhappy, he never
spoke on the subject, but kept the
secret of his discovery until the day
of his death. His wifeiwas to dis-
cover the immense change in his
feelings for her through his will, and
through his leaving his youngest son,
then still a child to the care of the
Emperor. Originally he had made a

Pellegrino last night shot and killed

'home in Brooklyn. Angelo made an

father turned on the boy. Con-
stantine then secured a revolver and

adorable, but the perfect woman.

thusiastic man to a bride ol less

once more safe he begged her to
come back 'to a husband who wor-

This kind of passionate adoration
breaks out in all his correspondence
with her, though in 1812 Rostopchi
ine was a man of forty-seven and his

mon who was charged with breaking
the law in the state of New York,
and who was awaiting trial there,
was arrested here by an American
officer, who, previous to the arrest
drew a revolver on the accused.
I The accused resides at Nutt’s Cor-
ners, Que., where he is engaged on
a. farm owned by Mr. Stoddard Haw-
ley. After the arrest he was taken
to his home to bid his friends fare-
`well. The American officer accom-
ipanied the- prisoner to his home at-
tended by a iew persons from this
village. After the party had reach
ed Nutt's Corners, it was found that
the officer had no papers and that
the arrest was illegal. The hund-
cuda were instantly, removed, the
prisoner regained his liberty and the
American ofhcer hastened to the
border, hotly pursued by several
men of the village. '
The ofhcer reached Alburg, Vt.,
where he took the ice and crossed to
Rouse's Point. At this point he
borded the train for Plattsburg.
