Decided Upon

Installation of '10 street lights is expected to get underway shortly in Pm-kdals following, a. meeting held there last night during which the Village Commissioners were empowered to complete a. contract for them. The motion to this effect was made by Commisslo H. Hennessey and was seconded from the floor by Mr. D. J. McAsklll. There was some debate and" slight opposition, but the motion was carried by a. wide margin. Another matter of importance to Parkdale residents arose when the subject of paving roads came under discussion. A statement was made by the Commissioners that

Fifth Queen's, had pledged the Government to lay one mile of pavement in Parkdala in 1953. Iti was believed that the work would get. underway shortly.

Water . System Survey

The Commissioners were also authorized to ascertain the cost of a survey in connection with the installation of a. water and sewer- age system in the village. They an- nounced they would make immed- iate inquiries. Regarding the mat- ter of water theregarose a discuss- ion when a question wail asked from the floor as to who was going to collect water rates on the Con- nolly Estate. This was formerly done by the Estate which then. paid the money to the City of Charlottetown. This was stopped last March and since then there has been no collection. Although there was considerable discussion on it no decision was reached as to a. solution.

A matter of interest to small fruit growers was under discuss- ion by Mr. E. L. Eaton, senior hor- tlculturist at the Experimental station, Kentville. N. 5.. when he told of the work done in rooting hlghbush blueberries. He said ex- periments had been carriecl on at ills station for several years and described the practice used as rooting in shaded. glass covered bold frames. This system has been successfully followed in Michigan and Massachusetts. He said that bread molds at Kentviile took a high toil unless someone was as- signed threc or four times a day to watch ventilation. The shading is necessary to prevent evapora- tion of leaf moisture faster than it can be taken up.

Potato Aphids

Two reports dealing with con- trol of potato aphids were present- ed. Mr. R. A. Kelly, of the Field Crop Insect Section. ,Fredericton, N. 3., compared DDT and Porn- thion as control systems. Mi-. M. E. MacGillivary, of the same depart- ment in Fredericton discussed the differences in potato aphid biology and possible signiflcanccs.

The same general subject was discussed by Mr. .7. B. Adams, of- ficer in charge of the Fredericton department. He said the interest in the aphids was not aroused by any demands from the growers in New Brunswick, but because of cer- tain inveatigaiions now underway. dealing with virus diseases. 5 Importance of adequate lime use on farms was brought out by Mr. J. He also reminded his listeners that a crop rotation made up chiefly of legumes and grasses, combined with it sound soil fertility program leaves little to be desired with re- gard to soil conservation and land use.

The speaker said the use of agri- cultural lime materials was one of the oldest practices known in soil management.
