Last Tuesday’s (Sept. 23rd) student meeting in the Malpeque gym wasn’t very successful. And it was the fault of all of us.

It was the fault of those who came prepared to find that the Interim Executive had everything neatly tied up in a package for us to rubber-stamp, yes or no.

It was the fault of the Executive for not work- ing well together, for not publicizing their activi- ties this summer, for not effectively distributing the copies Of the proposed constitution, for get ting as lost and frustrated as everyone else.

It was also the executive’s fault for giving us too much freedom, for making democracy more than a political cliche. We had not, under the tra- ditional closedudloors, back-biting method of PWC— SDU oligarchies, learned how to work with a de- mocracy, to work with its structure and formali ties.

It was the fault of those who came to dis- rupt, to try to impress (who?), to carry personal grudges, to waste time with irrelevancies, to use rumor and invectiv-e, most Of which. was false, and those who left when things weren’t going as they had planned. Save the amateur theatrics for the Drama Society, they can use you.

We have to decide now whether we want to be again caught up in the old grievance cycle, or whether we want a strong and progressive union. We can’t have both. ‘

We have been offered parity; let’s not settle for parody.

Staff democracy has once again voted down the suggestion Of an incompetent editor, and that is why you are reading “The Cadre”. The name was suggested by Dennis MacKay who apparently feels that the student press should spread a re- volutionary gospel.

Most people would agree to» that, although they would: disagree on how “revolutionary” to be. We will try to bring you accurate, informed opinions, and fair reporting of issues on and off campus. We hope to be a credible alternative to the professional press.

This year we hope to be out every week. But for “that to occur, we will need to get more co- operation from the student (body. Anybody who cares to write or even suggest an article, is en- couraged to do so, but we also need regular staff members who will devote some time to improving the quality of this paper as the year goes on. We need people to help in various fields besides writ- ing, including layout, business, and circulation; we also need at least two staff photographers.

Our present arrangement with photographers at

this university is most unsatisfactory, as eviden- ced by the number of staff photographs in this issue: none. We can’t run a newspaper without pictures. '

As usual we will print anything that is not a Violation of civil law. We» will print all letters. to the editor, space permitting (and I don’t see why it won’t permit). You can use a pen-name if the editor knows your real name. Sign your letter with your real name as well as your pen-name.

Faculty and all other non-student submissions are eagerly solicited, and could, if forthcoming, be a semi-regular feature.

Kindly type all submissions, preferably to a 60ustroke line (ex. set margins: at 20 and 80). We do not have the time to deal with untyped sub- missions- - '

Our office location will be printed on this page as soon as we know it our-selves. In the interim, we are posing the (old (very old) Red and

White office on Malpeque, along with the Presi- dent’s office in the Student’s Union building downtown. '

Don’t be afraid to criticize, (constructively,

we hope), because you are paying for this

But the few who worked on this issue can’t ac- complish miracles by themselves.
