In the morning periods the buy- i118 wave that; swept over the list pushed leading industrial-s 1 to more than 3 points higher to new five-year tops. During the forward surge the ticker tape was ggntjnu- ously from one to five minutes be- hind floor dealings. Transfers to- talled 4592,470 shares.

Scenes in the brokerage offices recalled days of 1929. Many so-call- i ed “small-fry" odd-lot traders. relics of former "boom" times, were in evidence. More than the usual‘ number oi women were present in some of the customers’ rooms. |

Market analysts, generally, said, they were unable toaccount ior| the spectacular purchasing demand that almost swamped stock ex- change floor dealers for a time.

At the same time, several‘ other influences were considered in the search ior speculative and invest- ment clues. It was noted that "Iron Age.” while estimating a. slight increase in current steel pro- duction, was none too sure oi the near future for this industry.

Support for the rails was forth- coming along with early freight car loadings for the past week which indicated a satisfactory increase over the previous seven days.

Bonds were about steady.

Shares that managed to hold small portions oi their advances included General Motors, Inter- n a tion a l Harvester, Chrysler, Southern Railway, and Standard Oil oi New Jersey. Issues off frac- tions to around 2 or more included Consolidated Gas. U. B. Steel, Bethlehem ,North American. Santa Fe. Goodyear and U. S. Smeltlng.
