The many friends of Mr. John E. Yeo. Harmony, were saddened to hear of his death which took place at his home on March 7. He had been ill for a few months. He leaves to mourn the loss of I loving husband, father and brother his wife. the farmer Edith Nesbit. Enmore. two sons. and seven daughters, one brother and sev- eral sisters.

Ion. Wfshart Mela. lsbertson: “Honourable senators. it is my painful duty to draw your attent- ion to the fact that since we last met we have lost two ‘of our es- uamed colleague.

The Honorable John Ewen Sin- clair. P. c.. of Queens. died Decem- ber 23. 1949.

Senator Sinclair was born at Summerfleld. P. E. 1. on December 24. 1879. the son of the late Peter sfnclair. M. 1'... A.. and his wife, the former Margaret Mclvlui-co. Educated at Springfield. P. E. 1., Senator Sinclair stayed on the farm where he was born. and became one of Prince Edward Island's most successful and progressive farmers. In iooo he was sppofnted a mem- ber of the “Swine Commission" that visited Europe.

He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1917, and was re- elected in the general elections of I021 and 1928. In 1921 he became a “ of the Privy Council and was appointed Minister without Portf . ‘ senator Sinclair ‘is survived by his wife, the former Rebecca Herd- ing. He had three children who are all living: two daughters. Mrs. A. B. Outcllffe of Charlottetown and Mrs. I. W. Jardine of Kensfngton. and one son. John Crawford. at home. Senator Si-.iclair's brother Peter, who was also a member of the House of Commons. predeceas- ed him some years ago.

senator Blnclalr was very active in Masonic work. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward island A. F. and A. M. He was an elder of the United Church at Summer-field and. for many years. superintendent of the Sunday school.

He was summoned to the Senate in 1960.

It is difficult for us in this house‘ to realize that the familiar figure of John Sinclair will be no longer with us. A member of the senate for twenty years. he was faithful in his attendance in this chamber and in committees. He served for years as the chairman of the Stand- ing Clmmfttee on Finance. and occupied that position at the time of his death.

Possessing a deep sense of re- sponsibility, he was loyal to his beliefs and to those with whom he was ssioclsted He was intensely proud of his native Province, and shove uncessfngly to accomplish what ‘he could for the welfare of its citillcns. His sound judgement was always available to those who‘ sought his advice. and his kindly manner radiated charm to all with whom he came in contact. Hts passing will be mourned by man:v.l and not the least of these will be his colleagues in the Senate of Canada. wholknew him so well for so many years.

Hon. John '.I‘. link: Honourable Senators. in the death of Senator Sinclair I feel as if I had lost one of my very dear friends from this chamber. When I came to the Senate some fifteen years ago he was one the first memb I got to know. because I had the pleasure and honour of knowing his married sister in Winnipeg. who for many years was my next-door neighbour. Even though he was on the op- posite side of.the house from me, I felt that in him at least I had a friend on whom I could depend. The years that followed taught me that John Sinclair did not take a stand on any question unless he thoroughly believed in it himself and thoroushly believed also that it wu in the best interest of not only Prince ldwsrd Island but of all Oaneda.

As has already been pointed out, he served as Chairman of the Pin- ance Committee. but so far .3; 1 am concerned and so far as my colleague on my left (Hon. Mr. As.

That committee is constantly being battered about in this dsmbar and in snothar plans, and it was always good to know that we could depend upon John Sinclair being present at the committee's amines every Mom‘-luv. Molntyro: Honorable Senators. as the govern- ment. leader has Just told us, since we last met we have lost two highly respected members of this house. in the persons of Senator St. Pere and senator John E. Sin. clair. one from the province d Quebec, and one from Prince‘ Edward Island.

Prince Edward Island has pro. duced some outstanding public men. but I think I can truthfully‘ say that none‘ were more out-I standing than’ John Ewen Bin-l clalr. His long political service to his native province and to Canada‘ will forever stand as a monument to his memory. ‘

The late senator was a member of the United Church st summer- fleld and was superintendent of_ the Sunday school in that com-r munlty. He was a member of the Masonic Order, and gave to it many years of iiseful service.

Senator Sinclair entered politics in his native province in 1003; he was elected to the House of Com- mons in 19x7. and in 1960 was sum- moned to the Senate. He stood high in the councils of his party. and will be greatly missed in pou-! tical circles. However. the ts' Senator never sllowed his political‘ differences to mar his friendship with anyone with whom he came in contact. His wide circle of friends extended far beyond the confines of his community snd the bound- aries of his province. His long career in parliament made html

known in parts . of the Dominion. He was endowed with keen

Senator Sinclair was one of the first senators I met when I come to Ottawa some sixteen years ago. He was keenly interested in am.‘ culture. and so was I we becune close friends, and I thought a grant deal of his sound tudgoient and good common sense. Later we sat together on the Divorce commit- tee. senator Sinclair eat to my right. and I always considered him my flaht-hind man. I always found his Judgsnentto be of the Very best. I was particularly pleas-| ed with him because he never vot- ed against the chairman.

Though I knew Senator Sinclair was not feeling well. his passing, following so closely the death of hi! NON-ml“. the late Senator COW. shocked me very much.
