excellence’; ‘nothing of a debut masterpiece’. These were just two of the accolades that greeted the Thrashing Doves’ album de- but Bedrock Vice. A hybrid of musical styles, seamlessly marry- ing blues to dance, garage to pop, the album was one of the fresher moments in an otherwise bleak musical year. Despite, or possibly because, being borne by a wave of media attention, the Doves failed to achieve the domestic success that was anticipated for them and which the album was merited. Four singles, each more “success- ful” than the last, and successive UK tours, won them a host of ad- mirers and took them to the brink of chard success.
The time that’s elasped be- tween Bedrock Vice and this Spring’s equally consummate follow-up Trouble in the Home would thus suggest a deliberate period of re-appraisal. Meanwhile, Jesus on the Payroll, a track from the album, was be- ing resurrected by certain DJ’s as THE Balearic track of the season (it was also an American dance chart hit). Indeed, the track sur- faced in 1988 on the definitive compilation Balearic Beats Vol- ume 1, thought the bad was de- sisted from releasing it as a single.
In the Spring of ’88, the Doves, still featuring Ken (guitar/vocals) and Brian (keyboards) Foreman, Ian Button (guitar) and Kevin Sargent (per- cussion and piano) began work on
their second A&M LP. The ab- sence, this time around, of big- game producers, indicates a ra- tionalization of the Doves opera- tion, something that stems from experience gained after the re- lease of Bedrock Vice.
“We wanted to make an LP close to home” Ken ex- plains, “both geographically and metaphorically speaking. This is a much more direct LP, more rep- resentative of how the band has developed whilst touring”. Pro- duced by the Thrashing Doves and Gavin MacKillop and mixed by Hugh Padgham, the album features eleven songs from Ken and Brian Foreman. Once more reflecting the band’s diverse stylistic inputs, songs include the first single “Reprobates Hymn”, “Lorelei”, “Candy Women” and “Like Heartbreak”. The album also continues the Doves’ liaison with Gail-Ann Dorsey, who con- tributes vocals and bass on four
of the tracks.

Review of “Beaux Strategem’”

The play, “Beaux Stratagem” is a comedy which is meant to be farcical.
The performance by the Uni- versity Theatre Society was done quite well, with this in mind. The play is an early 18th century British comedy, dealing with the love interests of Aimwell, (Derek Martin) and Archer, (Gordon Cobb) as they attempt to win the love of Dorinda (Elizabeth Reynolds) and Mrs. . Sullen, (Maryanne FitzPatrick). All four did a fine job with what, person- ally is a dated theme. The char- acter of Archer, is highly sexist, and is extremely obnoxious. This is the one area where Cobb has a problem with, otherwise he fits the part. Aimwell, who begins as a person looking for easy money, falls in love with Dorinda. In this sense the play is modern for all eternity. However the sexist atti- tudes of the characters, while not being totally overwith is never- theless exagerated.
The best performance, to this observer, is by Ed Fobes, who plays Scrub. The comedy of the play centers around him, and he fits the part to perfection, (al- most) the remainder of the parts are played well by the performers.
The director, (Gregson Winkfield) has obvi- ously worked hard at finding peo- ple who suits the various parts. In this he makes the play more ac- cesible to the viewers. His selec- tions, were quite good, especially when one considers that there are 17 roles to be filled in the play. It is difficult to find any particular moral lesson from the play. Al- though Aimwell, who did not in- tend it, falls in love with Dorinda. His original purpose is merely to gain an inheritance. This demon- strates the strange nature of love.

Ultimate worth is something which is difficult to find. like any typical farce, there is no sterling message to give to mankind. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is pleased to announce a project to be known as “PROBLEM COR- NER” and to be coordinated by Dr. Tomasz Kaczynski. The aim of the project is to make available to students a set of interesting and challenging problems. Another aim is the encouragement: of problem solving.
The basic rules of operation of the project are as follows:

nal solutions of any problem at a social gathering at the end of the semester.
