NEW COORDINATOR

The P.E.I. Environmental Network has announced the appointment of Eileen O'Grady as office coordinator. Ms. O'Grady, a recent graduate of U.P.E.I., has a background in health sciences and intends to study environmental issues as they relate to health. she also looks forward to carrying out the Environmental Network's mandate of providing referral services and facilitating communication among environmental organizations. The P.E.I. Environmental Network is located at 126 Richmond Street (near Pat's Rose and Gray Room), Charlottetown ClA 1H9 Phone/Fax 566-4170.

The Network will produce a bi-monthly newsletter featuring articles of interest to Network members and a calendar of events.

ANIMAL AND PLANT SIGHTINGS

A large run of Brook Trout was observed on the Morell River on September 26th (8H). Wade Mackinnon found a Painted Turtle on the side of the road at Point Prim on Sept. 11th. It was turned over to the AVG. Roberta Palmer seen 2 Red-bellied Snakes in her garden at Brackley this summer.

Three seals seen at North Cape on July 28 (Dsh). One seal was seen above Hillsborough Bridge on Oct. 6th (NSSS) and a red fox was seen at Charlottetown Airport on Oct. 6 (RP). One solitary coyote was seen walking along the roadside at MacDougall's Corner on Sept. 21 (G&DR)

Lupines were in flower at Brackley on Sept. 8. On Sept. 19th, scattered leaves or branches of red maple and whole pin cherry trees were changing to their vibrant fall reds. By Sept. 28th, the Island's forest viewed from the air had a reddish cast with the red maples now brilliant red and the pin cherries dropping their leaves. Leaf colour peaked on the weekend on October 10th with the strong winds of October 19th stripping many of the leaves (JDM).

Red-throated Loons - 20 at Cousin's Shore, Sept. 25th (33); 3 at Stanhope with 1 in summer plumage on Oct. 24 (RP)

Common Loons - 1 at Cedar Dunes Prov. Park on July 26 and 1 at Nail Pond on July 28 (DSh)

Northern Gannet - 5 to 6 at Cedar Dunes Prov. Park on July 26 & 27 (DSh), 3 adults seen off Savage Harbour on Oct. 4 (JDM)

Bar-headed Goose - last year's escapee from Hollis MacFadyens was still about in the spring and was seen with a wild goose at Jenkin's Pond (GR). 8H reported one with Canada Geese at Mt. Albion on October 24.

Wood Ducks - sighting are more common this autumn.

Greater Scaup - 3 seen at Cedar Dunes Prov. Park on July 27 (DSh)

Common Eider - 8 to 10 at Cedar Dunes Prov. Park on July 25 - 27 and 6 to 8 at North Cape on July 28 (DSh)

White-winged Scoter - at East Point on Sept. 25 (RC)

Black Scoter - 1 at Cedar Dunes Prov. Park on July 25 and 1 male at North Cape on July 28 (DSh); at East Point on Sept. 25 (RC)

Surf Scoter — at East Point on Sept. 25 (RC)

5 to 6 rafts of ducks (White-winged Scoter, Black Scoter, and Common Eider) numbering 10 to 50 birds were seen offshore between Cedar Dunes and West Cape on July 26 (DSh)

Turkey Vulture - 2 at Naufrage in August (TD); 1 at Margate on Sept. 30 (WM)

Golden Eagle (probable) - a documentation form describing a large apricot headed bird that was dark above and below and had a banded tail with fringed wings was received for a sighting at Eglington Cove on Sept. 1, 1991 (MEL). A documentation report from York Pt. is being checked.
