The UPEl women’s field hockey team is dewn in the rankings after its 3-0 loss to Moncton, but coach Barb Mullaly is high on her team.
This team is much im- proved over last years, even though it has many inex- perienced players.
With strong anchors from Libby Baldwin and Mary Chamberlain the team is moving uphill.
As Barb says “the team is going to improve”. What she feels is 'needed -is the con- stant coaching to make the- players respond automatically to action taking place. "
Barb admits she is not supposed to coach from the sidelines, but it gives her the chance to - “let off some steam”. '
Sunday’s game against Moncton showed good back and forth action by both teams, but Moncton was affored too many opportu- nities in front of the UPEI net.
Soon UPEI was down 2-0.

Barb recognizes defense is a problem; with 2 new half- backs and inexperienced full- backs they must as they go. ~

The second half play was dominated by the Panthers. With a strong offensive game, play remained largely in front of the Moncton net.
However at the 16 minute mark, Moncton hit back for the final goal ofthe-game. ‘ '
Play ended on a 3-0 note.
Barb feels that fan support would help the team and “make them feel good about themselves”.
The team is going strong and they feel their confidence building. This Panther is going to come out of its cage, and woe to the unwary opposition when it does.
This Saturday the UPEI Womens Field Hockey team plays Memorial in St. John’s, NFLD. The Gem wishes them the best of luck!

Scott Neil scored two’ goals against Mt. Allison last Friday to capture the title of UPEI’s Male “Athleteof the Week”.
Friday’s game, UPEI’s fourth straight even this season, was “not as physical as it usually is against Mt. A” In Scott?s words, “we missed a lot of chances in‘the first

Three players are on the injured list as of Monday; Steve Polenz, Glen Smiley, and Richard Pierre Gilles.‘ All are doubtful starters. “It’s going to be hard without them”, said Scott.
'This native’of Edinburgh, I Scotland came- to UPEI in 1981, originally to play hockey. Since that time, he has been named All Canadian for the 1982' soccer season, and has been an essential cog in the Soccer Panther power machine. _ .

The University of Prince Edward Island Panthers con- tinued their winning ways last weekend in search of another Atlantic University Athletic Association Soccer title by winning two games.
The Panthers (ft—0), who are ranked second in the country behind Laurentian, defeated eighth-ranked Mt. Allison 3—1 in Sackville on Friday and blanked Universite de Moncton 3-0 Sunday at home.
On Sunday, the Panthers seemed a little sluggish and it appeared they didn’t attack the ball when UdeM had possession. The Panthers had a fat of scoring chances but couldn’t find the net until late in the first—half.
At 32:00, Alan Spinks scored and the Panthers went to the dressing room with a slim 1-0 margin.
Twenty minutes into the second half Richard Pierre— Gilles, who has been denting the twines on several oc-
casions this year, put the Panthers up 2-0.
At 26:00, Paul Peacock added one more to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead which lasted for the rest of the game.
Steve Polenz, who was injured Sunday while at- tempting to head a ball and collided with a UdeM player, is a doubtful starter this weekend as the UPEI Panthers bring their perfect record on the road for two games.
Polenz has torn muscles in his lower back with some minor bleeding, and if he feels up to it he will start.
Two other players for UPEI are felling some aches and pains also.

Smiley has stretched .knee ligaments. Both players should be ready to dress for the weekend games though. The Mens soccer team play St. F.X. University of Antigonish Saturday and Dalhousie University of Halifax, Sunday. —- Support Panther Sports —

Although the Lady Panthers lost to Mt. A and Moncton this past weekend, Tracey put in excellant effort in both games, keeping. the respective scores down to 1-0 and 3-0. . ,
Describing these two games, Tracey said, “we bunched up” in the first games,” [but] it was a fair score ...”. In game two, “we had a terrible first half. [There was not hustle or motivation. We had a good second half, but nothing connected for us.”
