There were lots or sports on T.V. last weekend.

I found myself glued to the boob tube busily watching the CIAU Men’s hockey and Basketball finals as well as the US college playdowns, the Final Four and the World Junior Curling Championship from Scotland. 7

The highlight was when Canada’s rink, skipped by Bob Ursel, edge Switzerland in an extra end to take the Uniroyal World Junior Curling Championship. _

What a finish, as Ursel pulled off a spectacular raise take- out in the tenth end to force the extra end. '

The Ursel foursome jumped out to a quick '3-0 lead in the first end, but the scrappy Swiss team battled back to dead- lock the score in the finals ends. , .

The second biggest thrill of the weekend was the Canadian Men’s basketball championship from Halifax, Nova Scotia as the perennial national champs, the Victoria Vikings, nipped the Waterloo Warriors to take their sixth straight

I started with 64 teams, but with the weekend play there are

only thirty-two teams left. In three weeks, the American College Champ will be crowned. . -

The biggest disappointment was watching that horrible Canadian college hockey final on CTV. The only consolation was that an Eastern team won the championship.

York University nipped the number:one ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears to take the CIAU crown from under the Bears’ snouts. _ .

The York team won the game in the first period; as they scored three goals on Bears’ goalie Ken Hodge by using an impressive brand of forechecking. But after the first period, the game went downhill.

Alberta did not impress me on bit, and if the Bears are any indication of the Western teams, I’ll have to say that the East has the best hockey schools in the country. I enjoyed watching the video tape of the AUAA Championships .

There will be an intramural Supersports competition held

this weekend and I would encourage pEOple"to sign up and participate in as many events'as possible.

If you have not noticed the front page of The Gem, where a picture shows a group of students fishing and having a “jolly good time” in a boat in Blanchard Lake, look now.

I hope you looked, or the rest of this will seem really weird. The lake is frozen now and that means one thing —— POND HOCKEYJ

The Netled Gem is interested in sponsoring or promoting a pond hockey tournament down on the frozen body of water between Bernardine and Blanchard.

It wouldvbe a blast and a good chance for Vince Mulligan to do some scouting as a couple of positions are opne next year due to some graduations on the hockey team. \

I think we better work on it though, as Spring is just around the corner and the Blanchard Ice Palace may not be around much longer. ‘
