A Sad Death.

Last night 2 minister was summoned ! te the bedside of adying man. The man who lay gradually obeying the grave summons, gasped and growned. The minister moved to the bedside and held the hand of the victim. wild with grief, sank to the floor.

‘My friend,’ said the minister, * you are a 1 nan whose prosperous condition in this life has allowed yeu much time) for devotional exercises. Your dear little children, your wile informs me, are visiting relatives. They will not see thsir father die. How many chil- dren have you ?’

‘Thirteen,’ gasped the dying man.

‘I had no idea that you had so many. Peor little ones. Your doer wife looks as though she will die. Judging from your number of children, | should think that?vou had been married more than once. How many wives has the good Lord granted you ?’

‘Fifleen,’ groaned the man.

‘Surely not so many,’ said the: muin- ister. ‘ Think of this matter seriously. How many times have you been mar- ried ? =

‘Fourteen,’ eud the victim fell back exhausted.

‘Are you willing te die?’ asked the minister, after a pause.

‘Move three up, six down and eight te the left |’

A Smail Boy's Composition on the Horse.

A hoss ia @ very nice animal to pull round fire steamers and wagons and some other things. Some hosses is smart and some is old, but any old hoss will run terrible fast when you have fire-crackers at’em, fourth of July is the best time to make a hoss start, and to have great fun, too; but it is better to throw stones at lame hosses in the country. A hosses’ ears grow higher up on his head thas a man’s ears, bu: their mouths is smaller than a sbarks. Sharks is ferocious fish, and they swim through the sea and swaller sailors. My grandmother is ferocious, too, and she makes more noise than a saw-mill, and that is what my father says. If | were a hoss, L should rather be a circus hoss, and then I’d never take any, castor oil. I hate castor oil.

Notice to Bridge Builders,

“MEALED TENDERS, addressed to the K) undersigned (Secretary of Railways and Uanals), and endorsed ‘‘ Tender for Bridges, Welland Canal,” will be received at this office until-the arrival of the Western Mails on TUESDAY, the 15th DAY OF JUNE NEXT, for the construction of swing and stationary Bridges at various places on the line of the Welland Canal These for bigh- ways are to be a combination of iron and wood, and those for railway purposes are to be of iron.

Plans, specifications, aud general conditions can be seen at this office on and after MON DAY, the 3lst DAY OF MAY NEXT, where Forms of Tender can also be obtained.

Parties tendering are expected to havea practical knowledge of works of this class, and are requested te bear in mind that ten- ders will not be coasidered unless made strictly in accordance with the printed forms, and—in the case of firms—-except there are attached the actual signatures, the nature of the occupation, and residence of each member of the same; and further, an accepted bank cheque for a sum equal to $250 for each bridge, for which au offer is made, must ac company each Tender, which sum shall be forfeited if the party tendering declines enter- ing into contract fer the work at the rates and on the terms stated in the offer submitted.

The cheque thus sent in will be retured to the respective parties whese tenders are not accepted.

Fer the due fulfilment of the contract the party or parties whose tender it is proposed to accept will be notitied that their tender is accepted, subject to a deposit of five per cent. of the bulk sum of the coutract—of which the sum sent in with the tender will be con- sidered a part—to be deposited to the credit of the Receiver General within eight days after the date of the notice.
