The first of a. series of conven- tions of the P. E. Island Teachers’ Federation was held in Uigg on Monday, Aug.‘ 24th. 'I'hcre was a good attendance and great enthus- iasm and interest was evinced by the teachers.

The meeting opened with Mls Bessie MaoLeod, J-lsslstarit Super- visor of Junior Red Cross, acting as president and the following com- mittees were appointed:

Nominations: Joseph Cairns. Arr- na Riley and Estelle MacDonald.

Resolutions: Harris Jordan, An- nla Bruce, and Everett MacLeod.

Press: Blanche MaoLeod, Ernest Reid

After trhe minutes of the last meeting had been read by the Sec- retary, Miss Blanche MacLeod, and approved by the meeting, the not, ing president gave c. tine address on "the services of the Teachers’ Federationﬂﬁshe made particular mention of the Teachers’ Aid Ser- vice which should prove invaluable to teachers in solving difficult problems in school work.

Mr- W. n. McPhee, Supervisor then gave a very inspiring address on the “qualifications of a good teacher". He considered the spon- soring of good citizenship as being the chief object of school life, therefore the teachers have a great responsibility in the formation of character, Mr. McPhee stated that ri teacher should have a strong per- sonality and an almost irreproacli- able character which would make rm indelible impression on the pu- pil. He also mentioned tqiching ability and maintenance of dis- cipline ns being fundamental in a gOOd teacher. ,

Mr. H. J. Hynes, Supervisor for: Eastern Kings, followed and touch- ' ed briefly on such matters as, i school fairs, course of studies, and time tables. .

Miss Sadie Bruce, read a paper‘ on "The Teaching of English". She believed the teaching of correct speaking was the primary object in an English class. Several prac- tical contests were outlined by Miss Bruce to provide the incentive for

Mr. L. W. Shaw, Superintend- ent of Education in New foundland followed and gave some of the modern trends in the field of Edu- cation. Miss Catherine Maolnan, Super- visor of Red Cross activities in P. E. Island was the first speaka, she gave some valuable suggestions to teacher, as directors of Junior Red Cross Societies. She also pre- sented o, flag to Gaspereaux School, Miss Blanche Maclocd, teacher for having the "Baruier Branch" o! Junior Red Cram. She then intro- duced Miss Bessie MacLeod. as her assistant. In concluding the ad- dress on Junior Red Cross, Miss Maclreod gave some of the bene- flt derived from the maintenance of a Junior Red Cross branch in the school. l
